This is the second tri-annual global assessment on synthetic drugs developed under the UNODC Global Synthetics Monitoring: Analyses, Reporting and Trends (SMART) Programme, which has been generously supported by AusAID, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and Thailand.
This Report provides an overview of the global manufacture, trade, and use of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) and ecstasy, highlighting:
- expansion of ATS manufacture to new regions,
- new trafficking routes in Asia,
- emergence of methamphetamine in Europe,
- increase of reporting of injecting ATS use,
- possible resurgence of ecstasy, and
- emergence of analogue substances (designer drugs) in established ATS markets.
Of relevance to East and South-East Asia, the report notes:
- an increase in manufacturing of ATS in South-East Asia,
- diversification of ATS trafficking routes in the region, and the growth of inter-regional ATS trafficking though countries previously not identified.
