Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, visited Sahaviriya Steel Teesside Plant ahead of the steelmaking to be restarted soon, jointly welcomed by Mr. Win Viriyaprapaikit, President of Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI), Mr. Phil Dryden, CEO of Sahaviriya Steel Industries UK (SSI UK), and company staffs.
During the Sahaviriya Steel Teesside Plant visit, a fully integrated iron-and-steel making facility which is being re-commissioned to resume production by this December, Prince Charles went to the blast furnace plant and inquired about the restart progress. All staffs, receiving HRH closely, were highly delighted that the Prince had shown such great interest. His Royal Highness had shown concern with this steel works during his last visit in May, 2010 after it was closed and was touched by the community's commitment to keep the works alive. Besides Prince Charles’ visit, there has been royal connections to Teesside dating back to 1956 when Queen Elizabeth II visited this site 55 years ago, and Prince Andrew, the Duke of York visit Sahaviriya Steel Teesside Plant in June this year.
Win Viriyaprapaikit, Group CEO and President of SSI extended heartfelt gratitude to HRH Prince Charles since HRH conveyed congratulation to SSI’s success on TCP acquisition from Tata Steel in March. "Prince Charles visit is a historic event for SSI. The prince's visit represents another opportunity to deepen the partnership between SSI and the local community. The ongoing re-commissioning and recruitment work had received good collaboration from and will be of huge benefit to all stakeholders. It is an honour for SSI that His Royal Highness has given us this great support and recognition." Mr. Win said
Sahaviriya Steel Teesside plant is an integrated iron and steel making facility, with the second largest blast furnace in Europe. It has an annual slab production capacity of 3.6 million tons. With the integration of Sahaviriya Steel Teesside plant, SSI is now ASEAN’s largest fully-integrated flat steel producer.
