EU DELEGATION ORGANISES WORKSHOP ON FINANCIAL REFORM AND POVERTY REDUCTION IN BURMA/ MYANMAR

Bangkok--2 Nov--EU The Delegation of the European Union (EU) today announcedthat it will organise a workshop on the development of the financial sector in Burma/ Myanmarand its role in supporting inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction. The workshop,which will be held at The Chatrium Hotel in Yangon on 7 and 8 November 2011, will beopened by H.E. U Hla Tun, Minister of Finance and Revenue. His statement will be followedby welcoming remarks from Ambassador David Lipman, Head of the Delegation of theEuropean Union for Burma/Myanmar, and a statement by H.E. U Than Nyein, Governor of theCentral Bank of Myanmar. 'The financial sector is of vital importance to any economy. It accommodates savings,allocates investment, and provides the lifeblood for equitable growth. Problems in the financialsector inevitably lead to problems in the real economy. That is why it is important to addressweaknesses as early and as thoroughly as possible', said Ambassador Lipman. 'Recently, theappreciation of the kyat has posed challenges for the economy, and had adverse effects onthe employment and welfare situation of the general population. We hope that this workshopwill contribute to finding a way forward for the reform of the financial sector, on a path towardsinclusive economic growth and poverty reduction.' Speakers and discussants in the workshop will include prominent representatives of thepublic and private parts financial sector of Burma/Myanmar, as well as foreign experts. Theirdeliberations are structured around various themes such as Role of the Financial Sector inSupporting Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction; Reform of the Banking Sector;Development of a Capital Market; and Strengthening of the Central Bank — Regulation andSupervision. These structured discussions among experts and discussants are expected togenerate recommendations on an action plan for the development of the financial sector ofBurma/Myanmar.
