The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (
ESCAP) will be hosting Professor Robert Mundell of Columbia University, New York, to speak on the topic “Global Currency: Dollar, Euro, Renminbi” on Wednesday, 7 December 2011 at the UN Conference Centre, Bangkok.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of modern international economics and the intellectual father of the euro, Professor Mundell was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Economics for his analysis of monetary and fiscal policy under different exchange rate regimes and his analysis of optimum currency
areas. He has advised major international organizations and a number of
governments across the world.
His lecture will address global economic challenges, including the euro area sovereign debt troubles. He will also speak on the growing role of Asia-Pacific developing countries in the world economy and its monetary implications, as well as what the region could learn from Europe’s experience of regional economic integration.
Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, will open the lecture and moderate the discussion afterwards.
This event is part of the ESCAP Distinguished Person Lecture Series in which talks have been delivered by Professor Joseph Stiglitz (August 2009) and Professor Amarty Sen (July 2010), among others.
