Covering frequently-asked questions and common concerns that emerged from direct experiences of flood victims, the booklet addresses these issues in six parts to give readers, guidelines to manage the problems and restore their home properly after flooding. 100,000 copies of the “Home Renovation after Flooding” booklet are being distributed to flood-affected homeowners and the general public at no cost. The “Home Renovation after Flooding” booklet is published by Tra Chang and COTTO as a contribution to help people whose homes have been damaged by the severe flooding that has left countless homeowners in despair over what to do and how to restore their homes to livable condition. Hundreds of questions remain unanswered, as evidenced by the range of issues raised on social networks by homeowners looking for clear answers. As the experts in building materials, sanitary wares and fittings, and tiles, Tra Chang and COTTO have gathered key questions and enlisted the help of experts from all relevant fields to jointly provide the answers, including the Engineering Institute of Thailand Under H.M. The King’s Patronage (EIT) and the Thai Electrical & Mechanical Contractors Association (TEMCA). With this effort, the booklet is expected to guide evacuated homeowners in preparing for a safe return to their flooded homes, planning effective assessment of the damages and renovating their homes properly. The content of “Home Renovation after Flooding” booklet is divided into six main topics. The first topic entitled “Physical Inspection before Re-entering the Home” gives a top priority to ensuring safety from electrical hazards. This is important as the re-entry can be fatal if there was any electricity leakage to the floodwater. Before returning home, it is advisable to check with the local electricity authority whether electricity in the area has been disconnected, before having an electrician inspect the home for possible current leakage. Topic 2 is on “Electrical System and Inspection of Electrical Devices After Flooding”. A related topic to the above, this chapter provides information on how to assess the damages to electrical equipment and appliances in the home, such as wall sockets, refrigerator, washing machine, air-conditioner, water pump, as well as the overall integrity of the wiring, circuit breaker and other electrical system components. It is recommended that such assessment is conducted under supervision of an expert or a professional electrician. In Topic 3, the booklet addresses the issue of “Plumbing and Sanitation System”. This is a complicated system that needs immediate attention especially if there are damages to the piping, both for fresh water and drainage. The section provides guides on how to check the piping and fix possible leaks and clogs, together with relevant advices and precautions. It also provides practical tips for cleaning underground water tanks, bathrooms and sanitary wares that were flooded. In addition to the three top areas of priority mentioned above, Topic 4 is informative on basic knowledge about “Structural System”, focusing on structural safety of a flooded home. The topic covers structural differences among different types and builds of buildings, such as row house, detached house, wooden house, brick-and-mortar house, reinforced-concrete house, etc. As a result, inspection and repair of the structure can vary. This topic includes a guide to checking and repairing sagging fences and walls. Topic 5 is on “Interior Decoration”. A compilation of questions and answers about restoration works for the interior, the topic covers the repair, maintenance and cleaning of floors and tiles damaged or stained by floodwater; removal of stains and scratches from walls and ceilings; restoring doors, windows and hinges; cleaning and restoring furniture. The last topic revolves around “Restoration of Landscape”, sharing many practical tips to restore the garden and external landscape to their beautiful condition. These include caring for big trees, recovery of flooded trees, inspection and restoration of fish ponds, solving lawn subsidence, as well as the removal of water barriers including sandbag and concrete barriers without causing more damage to the home. 100,000 copies of “Home Renovation after Flooding” booklet are being distributed to flood-affected homeowners and the general public at no cost.
