Bangkok--26 Dec--Hill & Knowlton Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has congratulated THAI Airways International on the success of its first commercial flight using biofuel. A Boeing 777 aircraft, flying from Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, to Chiang Mai Airport, was powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines. THAI has confirmed it will also operate Rolls-Royce Trent XWB and Trent 1000 engines on 12 Airbus A350XWB and eight Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, part of a fleet modernisation programme which will improve the airline’s environmental performance. THAI President Piyasvasti Amranand said: “We are proud to have completed our first commercial biofuel flight. Our commitment to achieve the highest standards of environmental performance across all our operations will continue with the addition of extremely efficient Trent engines into our expanding fleet.” Nick Devall, Rolls-Royce, Chief Commercial Officer — Civil Aerospace, said: “THAI is an important customer for Rolls-Royce. We congratulate the airline on its first commercial biofuel flight and are pleased to supply additional, new, highly efficient engines that will help it meet its environmental and operational objectives.” When these engines have been delivered, THAI will be an operator of every member of the Rolls-Royce Trent engine family: the Trent 500, Trent 700, Trent 800, Trent 900 — as well as the Trent 1000 and Trent XWB. The Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 powered the 787 Dreamliner aircraft into passenger service for the first time in October 2011 and has accumulated more than 75 per cent of the aircraft’s flight test hours. The Trent XWB, the only engine available for the A350 XWB, is the fastest selling Trent ever with more than 1,100 sold. Test results have show the engine to be the most efficient large civil aerospace engine ever produced. The Trent family of engines has won about 50 per cent of the widebody aircraft market with a firm order book of more than 2,400 engines, and has accumulated more than 50 million hours of service.
