Mr. Kyoichi Tanada, President of Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd. said at an annual press conference that car sales in Thailand reached 794,081 units in 2011, posing a 0.8% decline, while the total car market in 2012 is expected to increase by 38.5% totaling 1,100,000 units. Toyota’s sales in 2012 are expected to reach 450,000 units, an increase of 55.1% equivalent to a 40.9% market share.
Mr. Tanada said “Last year’s automobile market has struggled against devastating natural disasters including the Tsunami in Japan and the major flood in Thailand, which affected the company’s domestic production. However, with continued high market demand, the combined car sales in 2011 remain at a similar level to the previous year’s reaching around 794,081 units, down by 0.8% compared to 2010.

For Toyota Sales performance, we sold 290,061 units, an 11.0% decline. Passenger car sales totaled at 138,104 units, a drop by 2.6%. Commercial vehicles also saw a 17.5% decline in sales totaling at 151,957 units and so did 1-ton pickups (including PPV) whose sales dropped to 134,970 units, down by 18.1%.

In relation to export, Toyota’s CBU export sales for 2011 were at 250,823 units, down by 25% valued at 107,483 million baht. OEM part export sales totaled at 54,233 million baht. The value of these exports amounted to 161,716 million baht. The decline in domestic and export sales was due to a shortage of auto parts.”
As for the market trend in 2012, Mr.Tanada said “It can be seen that there is still a very high demand in Thailand’s automotive market and the demand is likely to increase in 2012. With constant marketing campaigns from various brands introducing this year’s new models as well as supportive government policies, we foresee that the automobile market in Thailand will reach 1.1 million units, a record high in Thailand’s history of annual auto sales of over 1 million units.

As for Toyota, our sales target for 2012 is set at 450,000 units, comprising 214,000 passenger cars, 236,000 commercial vehicles and 214,100 1-ton pickups that is part of the commercial vehicle sales.

Toyota’s target export sales for this year is set at 375,000 units, a 50% increase compared to last year’s, valued at 157,000 million baht as well as another 64,700 million baht in CBU export sales, bringing the total export sales to approximately 221,700 million baht.”
Mr. Tanada also added “From what Mr. Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, said on 9 November when he visited Thailand that we, Toyota, will not abandon Thailand. We will stand by the community and we will definitely stand side by side Thai people to share the happiness and overcome any obstacles together. We will also continue to expand Toyota business in Thailand with confidence in the country’s preparedness, the people’s ability.
I would like to assure you that we will adhere to his words and I’m pleased to tell you that Toyota is building another manufacturing plant at Gateway Industrial Park under the name “Gateway Automobile Manufacturing Plant 2” as well as restarting a production line at TAW where the Fortuners were produced. The combined production capacity of the two plants, an investment valued approximately 8.2 billion baht, will be at 88,000 units. In addition, Toyota’s engine manufacturing plant, STM has already increased its production capacity. These efforts are made to meet the increasing customer’s demand.
