BANGKOK--20 Jan--Heath Channel Magazine One of concerned matters after the flooding is microbes that are still living in the air and breeding in the appliances and furniture in the houses. These bacteria and fungi are not invisible with naked eyes but they can cause severe diseases to humans. One way to protect ourselves against these microbes is to stop their growth by employing antimicrobial technology called “LIFE antimicrobial protection”. LIFE is a materials technology specializing in developing solid materials such as plastics, coatings, textiles, etc. with built-in ingredients that kill or inhibit the growth of micro-organisms. These materials, especially plastics, are becoming more and more essential in daily life; end products include food packaging and food contact application.Antimicrobial technology was invented by American scientists and has been used abroad for a long time. In Thailand, the company that adopts this technology and further developed is Life Material Technologies Limited. LIFE’s has real-life experience incorporating antimicrobial ingredients into a wide range of materials which can be grouped as follow:1. Plastics: Plastic products especially those that have food contact such as food storage box and cutting board requires extra hygiene. If these products are breeding ground for bacteria, they can be origin of food contamination and cause diarrhea and food poisoning symptom. 2. Textiles: Textile products such as pillow, duvet cover, bed linen are carriers and good media for the growth of micro-organisms. When microbes grow to high numbers in textiles, then can cause unwanted odor and trigger allergic reactions. Choosing products treated with antimicrobial protection can reduce this risk. 3. Paint: After the flooding, fungi are often found on the dirty stains left on the wall. LIFE antimicrobial technology incorporated into the architectural paint can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. 4. Others: such as tissue paper and medical equipments. There are already high numbers of microbes in hospitals. Professionals in healthcare environment are concerned with the danger of passing infections from ward to ward by contaminated equipments. Antimicrobial medical equipments reduce the risk of passing on harmful bacteria from one to another.Once incorporated into the material, the LIFE ingredients kill and inhibit the growth of micro-organisms that come in contact with the material, providing the product with built-in antimicrobial protection. Because the LIFE technology is built-in during the manufacturing stage, and is not applied as a surface finish, it provides continuous protection for the useful life of the product.Currently, Life Material Technologies Limited is taking another step in developing antimicrobial additives for plastics and coatings using essential plant oils and essential minerals. The new products will soon be introduced in Thai market.Special thanks: Mr. Tom E.S. Ellefsen Chief Executive — Life Material Technologies Limited Click for photo release at www.thaipr.net
