On 15 April 2012, The Redcar blast furnace is relit by Wills Waterfield, son of the late union chief, Geoff Waterfield who died aged 43 last year after leading the efforts to have this facility at Redcar resumed following its mothballing in 2010. This marked the resumption of iron & steel making at its SSI Teesside site. The blast furnace blow-in ceremony was held among SSI UK management and staffs, including Group CEO and President of Sahaviriya Steel Industries Plc. (SSI) Mr. Win Viriyaprapaikit, together with representatives from the local community and union.
