Bilateral Trade between France and Thailand Trade between France and Thailand has been growing since 2008 and reaches 3.29 billion EUR in 2011. Exports (France to Thailand) The market share of France in Thailand stands at 0.96% in 2011 with imports of French products totaling 1.08 billion EUR, and enabling France to maintain its second rank among the European countries behind Germany (2.36%) and ahead of Italy (0.92%) and the UK (0.85%). Despite the decline in 2011, ? transport equipment ? (mainly aircraft) remains the major export item. Perfumes and cosmetics are also an important part of the French presence in Thailand (155 million EUR). Although primarily an importer of electronic equipment, computer and mechanical, France still represents a substantial offer in this area with almost 200 million EUR exported to Thailand. Finally, the food industry realized an increase of 9.8% (99.8 million EUR). Imports (Thailand to France) Thai exports to France increased by 10% reaching 2.21 billion EUR in 2011. They are mainly made of industrial products (including textiles) and electrical products (computers and appliances). ? French investments in Thailand The EU accounts for 15.7% and France for 3% of Foreign Direct Investment in Thailand, which makes France the ninth European investor or third worldwide investor (behind the UK and the Netherlands) in Thailand in 2011. In the absence of statistics on investment stocks, analysis of the aggregate amount of flux since 1970 enables to evaluate the French presence at about 1.2 billion USD. It should however be noticed that these figures greatly understate the reality of the French presence, as several large investments of French companies have not been made directly from France (Total, Michelin, Casino…). Fifteen French projects are usually approved by the BOI annually, mainly in textiles, capital goods and electrical energy. Note also the growth of French investment in the services area. ? French community in Thailand Within one year, the French community in Thailand has increased its number by almost 5%. By the 31st of December 2010, 9 297 French were registered with the French Embassy (while the Embassy estimated that around 4 to 5.000 French in Thailand were not registered). Regarding the tourism sector, the statistics from the Ministry of Tourism indicated that 483,684 French visited Thailand in 2010, representing an increase of almost more than 10% from 2009. More than 350 French companies employing nearly 70,000 people across all sectors, are found in Thailand. Among them, there are 220 affiliates, representing about sixty large groups, but also many SMEs and more than one hundred companies established and run by French expatriates.
