The world’s best loved wax attraction Madame Tussauds unveils its brand new figure of Asian superstar Jay Chou, who has topped this year’s Forbes China’s Celebrity 100 list, at the Bangkok site to wow all of his Thai fans on the 6th floor of Siam Discovery Centre.
Born on 18 January 1979 in Taipei, Taiwan, Zhou Jielun, also known as Jay Chou, or simply as Jay, started his career writing music but has since then also moved on to singing, acting and directing — among other pursuits. His musical talent became apparent from a very young age as he started taking piano lessons at the age of four and is now equally skilled in many instruments such as guitar, cello and jazz drum as well as the Chinese Dizi.
He was discovered in a talent show where his complex melodies of piano and song-writing skills attracted the interest of the show’s host. He was hired to compose for many popular Mandarin singers such as Coco Lee, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, Vivian Hsu and Jolin Tsai. Jay shot to stardom almost overnight after he released his first album, titled ‘Jay’ in 2000. Since then he has released one album per year except in 2009, selling several million copies each. His music and name have gained recognition throughout Asia, most notably in regions such as Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and in overseas Asian communities.
His exceptional musical talent earned him hundreds of awards in Asia, including the World Music Awards, IFPI Hong Kong Album Sales Awards and Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards.
Apart from musical works, Jay is also internationally known as a director and actor. He won Best Newcomer Actor in both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards from his debut film Initial D (2005). He has since acted in other movies, including Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) directed by one of China’s most acclaimed directors, Zhang Yimou, Secret (2007) self-directed by Jay, Kung Fu Dunk (2008), The Green Hornet (2011) and The Viral Factor (2012).
The Taiwanese superstar has also topped this year’s Forbes China Celebrity 100 list, followed by Andy Lau and Fan Bingbing in the second and third places respectively. The annual list by Forbes China ranks the most influential names in showbiz and sports from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Rankings are determined by income and media exposure.
Jay’s new figure in his genuine outfit wore in Mine Mine music video will headline in the music zone alongside everyone’s other idols and star fantasy icons in the most advanced and interactive setting where guests can pose and perform with them.
