Conditions Apply For investment outlook, Miss RatanawanSaengkitikomol, Investment Manager, Aberdeen Asset Management Company Limited, said “Consumer price index rose a faster-than-expected 2.7% year-on-year on higher food and rebounding oil prices. The Bank of Thailand kept the policy rate stable at 3% as widely expected to spur economic recovery while the Commerce Ministry maintained its 15% export growth target for this year, despite June exports coming in at a worse-than-expected decline of 4.2% year-on-year. Meanwhile, June imports grew 2.6% year-on-year as the country continues to import construction materials and machinery for industrial repair and reconstruction post-floods. The Finance Minister targets the economy to grow by 7% this year as increased tourist arrivals should make up for slowing exports. We are cautiously optimistic that despite the ongoing debt crises in Europe and the US, Thailand should fare well given strong economic fundamentals and supported by the rapid post-flood rebound in economic activity. While any direct impact will be a decline to exports which is a significant part of GDP, Thailand’s exports are well-diversified both in terms of product and destination.Amidst the uncertainties, the financial health of our holdings remains strong and we expect their earnings growth to be resilient, partially from reconstruction, pent-up demand post-flooding and lower corporate tax rate.” For Asian stock markets, Miss Ratanawan stated “Asian equities fell towards the end of July as renewed bailout fears over Spain and lacklustre US earnings outweighed hopes of further central bank action following the European Central Bank’s pledge to support the Euro. Meanwhile, China’s manufacturing activity - an important growth engine of regionaleconomy -continued to contract in July albeit at a slower pace, which soothed worries of a hard landing. As our portfolio remains committed to well-run and financially sound companies with strong cash flow generation, we maintain our strategy to take advantage of market volatility to take profit where appropriate or build positions in selective holdings at undemanding valuations for portfolio outperformance over medium to long term.” Aberdeen Growth Fund (ABG)Registered date 18 July 1997.
