Boehringer Ingelheim Unveils

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, a global leader in animal health, launched "Going Beyond: Charting a Sustainable Future for Veterinary Medicine in Thailand" whitepaper, highlighting the challenges faced by Thai veterinarians, including stress from heavy workloads, long working hours, and a lack of professional recognition.

The study, which collected data from six countries in the region, presents issues related to the mental health and professional recognition of veterinarians, along with recommendations to strengthen the profession in Thailand. The findings reveal that despite their critical role in safeguarding animal and public health, veterinarians in Thailand face mounting pressures, including a shortage of professionals, high operational costs, long working hours, limited client understanding, and insufficient recognition. These factors contribute to elevated stress levels and pose a risk to the profession's long-term sustainability.

Key findings in Thailand:

  • 42% of veterinarians report a declining client base as a major challenge.
  • 70% of veterinarians and clinic staff highlight clients lack knowledge about animal health.
  • 74% of veterinarians face challenges with clients' lack of understanding regarding pet healthcare costs.
  • 58% work 50 hours or more per week - among the highest in the region.
  • Only 16% feel their profession is well understood by the public.
  • 64% believe that improved client understanding would help reduce work-related stress.

Inst. Dr. M.L. Narudee Kashemsant, former President of the Veterinary Practitioner Association of Thailand (VPAT) noted: "Many veterinary hospitals in Thailand operate on a two-shift system, with morning and evening shifts of 12 hours each. This results in working days of at least 12 hours, which contributes to physical and mental strain - especially when sustained over time."

Mr. Apisak Khunwet, Head of Animal Health, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health (Thailand) Limited, said: "Veterinarians play a vital role in Thai society and the economy, yet they face substantial stress and limited recognition. Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health is proud to initiate and launch this in-depth study for the first time in Thailand. The launch of this whitepaper honors their dedication, raises awareness of their challenges, and encourages broader support for professional sustainability. Achieving these goals requires collaboration across government, academia, associations, and the public. Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health is proud to contribute to building a stronger future for Thailand's veterinary profession."

Recommendations to Support Thai Veterinarians:

Based on the study, the whitepaper outlines six key recommendations to promote mental health, professional recognition, and a robust support network:

  • Education and public awareness - targeted campaigns through media, seminars, and educational institutions to increase public understanding of veterinarians' roles.
  • Retention of veterinary talent - advocating fair compensation, benefits, and clear career development pathways to retain and inspire talent.
  • Wellbeing support - providing access to counselling, peer support groups, and training for veterinary practices on mental health and stress management.
  • Policy and regulatory advocacy - working with government and veterinary organizations to advance initiatives such as pet insurance and expanded preventative care.
  • Industry recognition - establishing awards and recognition programs to celebrate veterinarians' contributions and raise public appreciation.
  • Strengthening professional networks - fostering closer collaboration between veterinary associations, government, and animal health companies to amplify the profession's collective voice.

As a global leader in animal health, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health continues to implement initiatives addressing the challenges faced by veterinarians and elevating professional standards in Thailand. The "Going Beyond" whitepaper underscores the company's commitment to practical, research-informed solutions that strengthen the veterinary profession and support its ongoing development across the country.
