ISIT, SSI and steel operators co-organized “Thailand Steel House Contest 2012: Greenovation: Less is more” to win the Royal Trophies from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Siridhorn and awards with a total value of Bt. 1 million. ISIT confirmed the contest can attract distinctive points of steel to be applied with Green Innovation to help save energy and manage internal resources, in line with “Economic sufficiency,” while SSI hopes to enhance steel houses to international level, creating an educational community for all stakeholders. ISIT aimed at arranging roadshows in 25 universities around the country and inviting professionals to join in.
On 24 August 2012, at Plenary Hall, Sirikit National Convention Center, Mom Rachawong Pongsawat Sawasdiwat, Minister of Industry, as a guest of honor, presided over the press conference of “Thailand Steel House Contest 2012: Greenovation: Less is more.” to win the Royal Trophies from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Siridhorn and awards with total value of Bt. 1 million. The contest was a collaboration between Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand (ISIT), Sahaviriya Steel Industries Plc. (SSI), steel companies including Siam Yamato Steel Co., Ltd. and Pacific Pipe Public Co., Ltd.
The Minister of Industry revealed about the third Thailand Steel House Contest that the contest is a project, encouraging the usage of steel as it is an important material that boost the country’s microeconomics and macroeconomics by supporting creative ideas of using steel in real estate industry for architects and engineers in both education and profession circles and supporting Green Innovation which concentrate on energy saving and natural resource preserving.
Dr. Wikrom Vajragupta, Director of Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand (ISIT), said about “Thailand Steel House Contest 2012” that this contest has sparked off the creative idea of bringing house designs from the contest to apply to future houses, as steel has the uniqueness and advantages such as the unique appearance, the light weight, comparing to concrete structure, steel can be applied to complex or easy-to-modify structure.
“When applying the uniqueness of steel to Green Innovation, it will help save energy and efficiently manage resources in a building. This will sustain house designing, material choosing, house constructing and better living standard. It is also in line with “Economic Sufficiency,” which is an idea from H.M The King.” Dr. Wikrom said.
Mr. Nava Chantanasurakhon, Vice President of Public Affairs and Social Responsibility Division of Sahaviriya Steel Industries Plc (SSI), said that “SSI sees the importance of promoting steel because steel is environmentally friendly. Therefore, SSI has supported the steel house contest which provides an opportunity for university students and professionals to share their house design ideas by using steel as the main components. This has created a platform for all stakeholders to share their ideas. Moreover, at present, there are many aspects, that are needed to be concerned, such as global warming, energy shortage and rushing living style of people who live in the city. By using steel for construction, the strong point of steel can respond to these concerned aspects. This is because steel can help energy saving, reduce construction period, be modified to many styles to fit in limited spaces and 100% reusable. Therefore, this is a contest, focusing on environmentally friendly house and sharing knowledge with all stakeholders.”
In additional, on 8 August 2012, ISIT arranged the first roadshow to promote the contest at the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Thammasat University, Rangsit campus. The activity received many good feedbacks from lecturers and students. Moreover, it aimed at providing information and attracting people to join the contest. The road show will be continuously run throughout August-September 2012 in 25 universities around the country.
As for the conference “Thailand Steel House Contest 2012,” there was a panel discussion “Steel House…The Future House Trend.” The panelists joining the discussion included Mr. Prapakorn Watanyakul, Managing Director of Architects 49 Ltd. and Mr. Boonlert Hemvijitraphan, founder of Boon Design Co., Ltd.
