The 2nd Asia-Oceania Algae Innovation Summit (2nd AOAIS), hosted by PTT Public Company Limited, kicks off today at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Bangkok, Thailand. Under the theme: “Algae for Sustainable Development”, this unique international conference will be held from September 3-5, 2012.
The Petroleum Institute of Thailand (PTIT) in coordination with Thailand Collaborative Network on Microalgae for Energy (THINK ALGAE) Consortium namely, PTT, the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), Chulalongkorn University (CU), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) and Mahidol University (MU), are the organizers of this prestigious event which promises to be a resounding success.
Over 500 distinguished experts and participants from 11 nations around the globe, including prominent policy-makers and leading economists from the government, industry and academia, have been brought together to discuss key technical, economic, policy and environmental issues related to the dynamic conference theme. Significant research advances will be unveiled through almost 100 high quality presentations and the extraordinary potential for this significant alternative energy research and development will be highlighted at this unique forum. With the Poster Session open to the academia and interested parties, the event is expected to be attended by well over 700 participants.
Presiding over the 2nd AOAIS Opening Ceremony today, Dr. Pailin Chuchottaworn, President and Chief Executive Officer of PTT and Advisor of the 2nd AOAIS, pointed out that this forum, built on the groundbreaking legacy of the 1st Summit held in Tsukuba, Japan in 2011, has now evolved to become one of the most important and unique international conferences dedicated to Algal technology.
The Summit features four main sessions in the oral presentations:
- National policies, roadmaps and implementation plans on energy, especially thoseinvolving biofuels and micro-algae from selected Asia-Oceania member countries aswell as those from other regions throughout the world
- Investment, technical development, industrial R&D support using algae as the source ofbiofuels from leading companies and start-ups
- National/international networking and collaboration
- Research, development and demonstration projects concerning micro-algae cultivation,oil extraction and by-product valuation (Algae biology / physiology / algae genetic/metabolism/ algae cultivation / harvesting / extraction/ algae applications/ life cycleassessment and economic assessment related to micro-algae)
An exhibition of technology and posters displaying technical papers as well as presentations of research results from leading regional and global companies and experts, is also highlighted at the event.
In addition, a one-day scientific excursion will be organized on the final day of the conference for a total of 80 participants to visit the demonstration facilities at the PTT Research and Technology Institute in Wang Noi, Ayutthaya province as well as an integrated algal laboratory and mass production facilities at TISTR Technopolis in Rangsit, Pathum Thani province.
