Bangkok--17 Sep--Sahaviriya Steel Industries
SSI UK has announced that on 13 September 2012 its iron and steel making facility at Teesside has now produced one million tons of steel since the plant was restarted in April this year.
Mr. Phil Dryden, Chief Executive of SSI UK said that “Although this has been a very tough year for steel businesses across the globe, the plant has operated extremely well since the restart and this is another important milestone reached. It is a demonstration of the commitment shown by SSI UK employees and is testament to the support received from all the stakeholders involved in the rebirth of iron and steelmaking on Teesside”
Mr. Win Viriyaprapaikit, Group CEO and President of Sahaviriya Steel Industries Plc. or “SSI” added that “This marks an important achievement for SSI and a historical milestone for Thailand and United Kingdom. Starting up production with a new workforce after 2 years of mothballing had its challenges and this 1 million tons milestone affirms the stabilization of our operation. I deeply appreciate and thank all employees for their hard work and dedication, and also all our stakeholders for their continuous support. This 1 million tons of steel is worth approximately US$550 million of export revenue to the UK and is a meaningful contribution to the local economy in Teesside. Most of this steel has come to Thailand and has been further processed to feed our customers' strong demand, and helps to enhance our sales volume in the third and fourth quarter.”
