The ACIIA currently has 16 affiliates, Australia, China, Hong Kong-China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Chinese Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Thailand, Papua New Guinea and Azerbaijan. Its purpose is to bring the standard of the internal auditing profession and responsibility at an international level throughout Asia, including exchanging information and knowledge between countries. To uphold the ACIIA goal, a conference is held in Asia with a member as the host each year, as in 2012 Thailand has received the honor.” Currently, many internal auditors of countries in ASEAN are developing and preparing for the ASEAN Economic Community. As for countries such as Singapore and Philippines, they have been aware of the issue earlier by supporting internal auditors in their country to acquire the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) qualification, which is a Global Professional Certification Program, now with more than a thousand CIA. Meanwhile in Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar are also acquiring more CIA certifications, this shows the awareness in internal auditing and the effort to be accepted internationally as a ticket or an opportunity to work abroad. Mr. Suwan stated that the role of the institute in supporting and improving internal auditor standards is to increase the knowledge and skill and focus especially on following the standards of an internal auditor, as it is the foundation that leads to quality workmanship. Also supporting Thai internal auditors to acquire the CIA certificate which is well known throughout the world as major organizations or companies in the stock market believe that CIA have quality and can help the organization. The certification is a opportunity for internal auditors to have a stable career, be needed and obtain higher income. Thailand currently has over 500 registered companies but only has 349 CIA, which is not enough compared to Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines who have much more. Having such a low number allows the opportunity for foreign CIA come into Thailand given the chance from major companies. The high positions in the field of internal auditing being a foreigner are very possible but the institute would to see Thai Chief audit executives in Thai companies. Mr. Suwan also stated that the strong point of the Thai internal auditor is maintaining working standards and understands the business environment and Thai working culture. The questions asked are in a polite manner which leads to cooperation and maintains a good relationship between one another, eventually leading to acceptance in trying to improve and change. This might be considered as a special characteristic of a Thai internal auditor. Thais also have a great capability to adapt in multi-cultural workplaces. The main issue to improve now for Thai internal auditors is their English skills in order to compete with other IA from other countries. The English standard with the younger Thai internal auditors have improved. CPE Currently, the internal auditor career is an independent occupation and is not approved in the Act of Parliament like other occupations but in the future after such a change and the opening of the ASEAN community, the job market for this profession will expand. Foreign IA will be able to work in Thailand and major companies will have a wider choice. Thai internal auditors must improve themselves in their field and with their English skills. Thai internal auditors that are CIA qualified can work abroad to receive higher income easier. Although they still need to report to receive the Continuing Professional Education(CPE) each year to maintain their CIA status according to IIA regulations. Those who fail to report or lack of CPE will be suspended until they meet the regulations. For further information, please contact 02-946-8470-2
