Company sharpens focus on Southeast Asia and celebrates community in Thailand
Airbnb, the world’s leading marketplace to list, discover and book unique accommodations, today announced its continuing expansion into Southeast Asia with the beginning of focused efforts in Thailand. Airbnb will focus on engaging with its rapidly-growing community in Bangkok and throughout Thailand, as guest nights booked in Thailand through Airbnb’s platform have nearly quadrupled just in 2012.
“Airbnb is about creating unique, memorable experiences, and we’re seeing a huge increase in demand in Thailand and across Asia,” says co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Nathan Blecharczyk. “Thailand is one of the premier travel destinations in the world, and Thai people are also traveling abroad at increasing rates, so Thailand will be a crucial market for us as we continue to grow.”
A few statistics on Airbnb’s growth in Thailand:
Guests have come from 98 different countries around the world to travel in Thailand on Airbnb.
The number of Airbnb guest nights booked by Thai people traveling has increased 270% in 2012, with the most popular destinations being Hong Kong, Paris, New York, Amsterdam, Rome, and London.
Airbnb has over 1300 listings in Thailand, including 400 in Bangkok, 250 in Phuket, and 170 in Koh Samui.
The average Airbnb host in Thailand rents out their place occasionally, and makes roughly $2000 USD annually. Some hosts that rent out more regularly, however, can make upwards of $7500 USD per year.
To support the rapid growth in Thailand, Airbnb has tabbed Ole Ruch as manager of the Southeast Asia region. The team focused on Thailand will work to better support hosts and guests in the market, assisting in managing listings, bookings, and educating users about the Airbnb process.
Airbnb is currently the world market leader in unique, short-term accommodations. In June the company celebrated 10 million nights booked, and on any given night, over 50,000 guests are staying at Airbnb accommodations around the world.
Airbnb is also available for download in mobile application on both iOS and Android platforms. The app was named iTunes’ Travel App of the Year.
