Bangkok--13 Nov--PR One Network Thailand cloud adoption growing with almost half preparing to deploy cloud initiatives within the next 18 months Supporting a more mobile and flexible workforce a priority Thailand companies increasing investment in cloud training and enablement VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced the results of its 3rd annual VMware Cloud Index in Thailand. More than 300 local respondents were surveyed in 2012, and the results were presented at the annual VMware Solutions Symposium (VSS) in Bangkok. The VMware Cloud Index is a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of VMware in Thailand. A summary of the study is available for download at www.vmware.com/ap/cloudindex. The results of the VMware Cloud Index 2012 revealed that cloud adoption rates in Thailand are rising. 83% of respondents have already adopted cloud solutions or approaches, or are currently planning to implement cloud computing. Of those that have not implemented cloud solutions, almost half (48%) plan to do so within the next 18 months. Strong Cloud Adoption Curve Lies Ahead for Thailand Investing in cloud computing in Thailand is seen as a means to gain a competitive advantage. Specifically, Thai respondents agreed that cloud computing will enable their organization to compete more effectively in the marketplace (83%), and that if their company does not pursue cloud initiatives, they risk falling behind their competitors (68%). “The VMware Cloud Index 2012 indicates clear progress and a new era of IT transformation in Thailand as more than half of Thai respondents planning to adopt cloud computing are projected to do so within the next 18 months,” said Dr. Chawapol Jariyawiroj, country manager, VMware Thailand. “VMware continues to support the industry on the cloud journey as the marketplace evolves to the Software-Defined Data Center approach to cloud computing.” VMware has recently made announcements to support the software defined data center at VMworld 2012 in San Francisco and Barcelona, and announced products such as the VMware vCloud? Suite 5.1 (now generally available) and new management solutions. When the top reasons for implementing cloud computing in Thailand, respondents strongly rated the need to empower the business by simplifying access to IT resources (80%); the ability to optimize their existing IT management and automation capabilities (78%); and the desire only pay for the IT the business actually uses (76%). Cloud and Mobility are Converging to Drive Productivity Eighty-three percent of Thai respondents agree that cloud computing will help them support a more mobile and flexible workforce, whilst 70% agree that their organization is concerned about end users accessing cloud-based applications and services from mobile devices used for work. “Of the companies we surveyed, 65% said they have a formal strategy in place for supporting end-user computing, including access to cloud-based services from mobile devices. We expect this to become even more pervasive as organizations recognize the need to adapt their IT infrastructures and policies to accommodate employee preferences for a new and more mobile way of working,” added Dr. Jariyawiroj. Organizations Spending More on Cloud Training in Response Seventy-one percent of respondents surveyed said cloud computing has made their job less complex, and 62% of respondents agreed that their organization is increasing spending on cloud training for employees. This puts Thailand ahead of the regional statistic at 55%. “Organizations need to be agile not only with technology, but with its people. That is why VMware organizes enablement platforms throughout the year to help customers stay at the forefront of the latest industry developments. VMware Professional Services works closely with customers to architect and successfully implement their cloud infrastructure, and VMware’s Cloud Ops intellectual property addresses how customers can build, operate, staff and measure a cloud environment to help maximize business innovation and efficiency,” said Dr. Jariyawiroj. Service Providers Can Enable Customers to Overcome Cloud Barriers The Cloud Index also revealed some of the top barriers to cloud adoption in Thailand are: access to reliable and affordable broadband (75%); data privacy, residency, ‘loss of control’ (73%); and integration with existing on-premise systems (70%). “This year’s survey shows that the role or importance of telcos and service providers is increasing or will increase as a result of cloud computing (64%) compared to 2011 (50%). This reinforces the growing trend of customers moving their virtual machines and virtual applications between their internal datacenter and those of our service provider partners such as iNet with a centralized hybrid cloud management user interface,” said Kevin Pratesa, director, Service Providers & Public Cloud, VMware ASEAN.“In this way, they can connect and manage all virtual and cloud environments, gain deep visibility into their virtual resource allocation and consumption, and be capable of high availability with service level agreements in place,” Pratesa added.
