These future technologies support Motor Expo 2012’s theme of “ Meet Tomorrow’s Cars Today” which reflects the desired features of future cars — convenient, fuel economy, safe and environmentally friendly. Five Model Year 2013 cars to be launched at the expo will be the Volvo S60 DRIVe, V60 DRIVe, S80, XC60 D4 and XC90 D5. The new cars come with more luxurious touch in the passenger cabin with new ergonomically designed gear shift knob which the tip of it is illuminated with white light and gear position is indicated with green light to increase gripping and visibility for drivers, especially when driving at night. Chantana Vatanaromya, President of Volvo Car (Thailand) Co Ltd., said, “Thanks to our “Designed Around You”, Volvo has been able to develop cars and technologies that enhance people’s driving comfort and road safety, the qualities that best address urban and modern consumers’ lifestyle and needs. We take the Motor Expo 2012 as the special occasion to launch our latest automotive technologies that are more convenience, fuel saving, safe and environmentally friendly, which also matches well with the event theme of “Meet Tomorrow’s Cars Today”. The new technologies will best emphasize our leadership and further raise public awareness on road safety and care for other drivers and people who share roads. Customers who buy Volvo cars at the event will have the privilege to enjoy the future technologies immediately. “These new technologies are proof of our ultimate vision of an accident free traffic environment. Volvo Car Corporation's short-term target is that no one will be killed or injured in and by a new Volvo car by 2020. In recent years, focus has shifted from protective to preventive safety and we are making continuous progress. New technologies from Volvo can therefore warn and assist drivers in difficult situations, in order to mitigate or avoid an accident,” said Chantana. Future technologies NOW - Active High Beam Active High Beam helps the driver utilize high beam more efficiently. It offers automatic switching between low and high beam at the right moment. Active High Beam is using forward looking camera located in the top middle of front windscreen to detect the headlights from the on-coming car. . Advanced image processing software analyses this data and provides information about the position and direction of the on-coming car. The calculation serves as the basis for automatic switching between low and high beam. This gives the driver the best possible visibility at night without interfering the visibility of other road users. The technology can be equipped with Active Bending Lights — swiveling headlamps that follow the sweeps and bends of the road. Visibility in poor conditions is also enhanced with the option of an electrically heated windscreen and a rain sensor, which automatically starts and regulates the wipers when it rains. - Tunnel Detection Tunnel Detection will automatically turn on the headlights when the car enters into dark area or tunnel. The headlights will turn back to the setting it had before when the car passed the tunnel. Tunnel Detection uses special sensor located on the front windscreen. This does not only increase the visibility to the driver and other road users during passing through the tunnel but also reduce risk that might occur due to rapidly change from bright to dark environment. Human eyes needs time to be adapted from bright to dark. - Road Sign Information The Road Sign Information gives an extra “eye” on the traffic environment. It reminds the driver to respect traffic rules for safety and helps reduce risk of accident. The information flow in the traffic is high and it is sometimes difficult for driver to catch all information, especially in the distracting traffic situations. Road Sign Information will assemble the most important road signs, prioritize the information and display in the combined meter. This will give the driver extra time to catch up on important sign on the road. The recognized signs detected by this technology must follow to the EU and USA Standard. In addition to the newly launched technologies, Volvo customers will also enjoy other innovations, such as City Safety which is activated at the car’s speed of up to 30 km/h and automatically stops the car before it hits the leading vehicle; Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, activated at the car’s speed up to 35 km/h, that detects pedestrian moving in the same direction of the car and automatically stops if the driver fails to hit the brake in time; and Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake that warns the driver when the distance between the car and the leading vehicle falls too short, automatically stops the car when the driver fails to brake and activate emergency lights to warn the car behind.
