Big C and Commerce launch OTOP zone targeting foreign tourists nationwideand welcome Songkran with Thai Mango FairFollowing the Prime Minister’s direction for Ministry of Commerce to work with modern retailers to support OTOP products, Big C today launches the ‘Taste OTOP, Taste of Thailand Zone’ at Big C Rajdamri and in 25 tourist-frequented stores nationwide to promote and increase market opportunities for OTOP products among foreign visitors using Big C’s experiences and distribution channels across country.
Kudatara Nagaviroj, Director of Corporate Affairs of Big C Supercenter PCL, reveals that “Big C Supercenter’s OTOP zone aims to create new marketing opportunities for OTOP products in hypermarkets, apart from selling OTOP to Thais or simply exporting them. Foreign tourists have strong potentials to support OTOP as last year over 22 million foreign tourists Thailand last year and the figure will be on the rise especially with the upcoming AEC. Foreign tourists from China, India, Vietnam, Korea, Russia, Europe, Asia, and Middle-East are looking for good-quality and value-for-money products that they can bring back home to their friend and families. This is a perfect match to Big C as we offer wide range of OTOP products at low prices. A large number of our stores have also been frequented by foreign visitors as tour operators usually bring them to our stores before flying back home. As such, Big C, in cooperation with MOC, aims to use this marketing strengths and opportunities to support and promote OTOP among foreigners.”
“A huge number of foreign tourists will visit Thailand during Songkran festival, Big C and MOC therefore will use this opportunity to launch “Taste OTOP, Tastes of Thailand Zone” in 25 Big C Supercenter and Big C Extra stores which are frequented by foreign visitors such as Rajdamri, Ratchadapisek, Rama 4, Ladphrao, Mega Bangna, Chiang Mai (2 stores), Phuket (2 stores), Pattaya (3 stores), and Ubonratchathani. We have also developed OTOP leaflet in English to recommend the must-buy items and provide paper box and ropes for tourists for packing free of charges,” Kudatara continued.
“Big C has also developed mid-and-long-term plan to promote of OTOP products such as organizing cross-regional OTOP fairs and featuring OTOP products on our online shopping application which is available via iPhone, Android, and PCs. We emphasize on new marketing angles as well as creating customers’ awareness and demand through convenient, fast and low-cost sale channels. We will work closely with MOC to train OTOP producers on product & packaging development as well as business competency. “As part of Big C’s cooperation with Ministry of Commerce to support Thai farmers, Big C will be running ‘Thai Mango Fair’ from today until 30 April. Thai Mango Fair will bring 18 popular and rare varieties of Thai mangoes from 12 provinces, as well as Big C Quality Line mangoes which have been quality-controlled from farm to table to guarantee taste and freshness to Big C stores nationwide. Big C expects that Thai mango sales this year to increase by 20% compared to last year and aims to purchase 70,200 tonnes of fruits and vegetables, a 35% increase from 2012 volume, with the approximate value of 3.5 billion baht,” Kudatara concluded.
