Don Bosco University, Assam, India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) aimed at formalizing a Unified Bachelors-Masters degree program. Signing the MoU, Vice Chancellor of Don Bosco University (DBU) Dr. Stephen Mavely stated that both Don Bosco are AIT are reputed brand names, and the partnership will help both parties.
The MoU was signed on 7 June 2013 by Dr. Mavely, and the AIT Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Sivanappan Kumar.
Dr. Mavely stated that besides the Unified program, Don Bosco University is also looking towards faculty and staff exchange, and joint research collaboration. He added that while Don Bosco institutions are functional in 132 countries, the Don Bosco University in Assam is the first to have English as its instructional language. Other universities among the Don Bosco institutions use Spanish and Portuguese as instructional languages. The Assam campus will be moving to a new 500-acre area, and is already fostering collaborations with universities in the United States, Italy and Germany.
Prof. Kumar, while welcoming the delegation provided an overview of AIT, and suggested that besides academic programs, the two could work together in research projects from India’s Department of Science and Technology among others. He suggested that DBU could also collaborate with AIT’s outreach activities. DBU has 124 technical schools all over India, where it offers diploma and certificate courses to over 20,000 students every year.
Also participating in the signing ceremony were Dr. Weerakon Ongsakul, Dean, School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD); Dr. Amararatne Yakupitiyage of SERD; Prof. Nazrul Islam of School of Management (SOM); Dr. Sangam Shrestha of School of Engineering and Technology (SET); Mr. Ahmed Amjad Ali, Head, External Relations and Communications Office (ERCO); and Mr. Tenzin Rabgyal, Senior Program Officer, ERCO.
Accompanying the delegation was Dr. Sunandan Baruah, Head of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, DBU. Earlier the delegation from DBU also met Dr. Anil Kumar Anal of SERD where they discussed possible collaboration in the field of food processing and biotechnology.
