Bangkok--11 Jul--Sahaviriya Steel Industries SSI reveals that its Iron and Steel Making Business in UK has started the operation of the Pulverised Coal Injection (PCI) plant, worth USD 65 million of capital investment, marking a major milestone and turning point for its upstream business. Sahaviriya Steel Industries Plc. (SSI), the ASEAN’s largest fully-integrated flat steel producer, has committed USD 290 million of capital investment to modernize and enhance its SSI Teesside plant, which had steadily ramped up its production of steel slabs since restarting the plant in April last year. The PCI Plant is a key element of the investment program; it will elevate the furnace performance to world-class competitiveness and also significantly increase the hot metal output from current 8,500 tons per day to 10,000 tons per day. “This is a major milestone and a turning point for the business. Pulverised coal injection allows us to use cheaper coal thereby potentially reducing our cost by 7% and also uplifts the furnace productivity giving us 20% higher output and lower fixed cost per unit. This milestone also marks the completion of the USD 290 million SSI UK Restart Project, our first phase of investment program to modernize and enhance the SSI Teesside plant,” Mr. Win Viriyaprapaikit, Group CEO and President of SSI said.
