Bangkok--1 Nov--Neo Target
The Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand with its alliances in business, financial and investment sectors will press ahead with submitting a letter of petition to the US Embassy in Thailand to oppose the blanket Amnesty Bill which has already passed the second and third readings of the House. In particular, in its third reading on 1 November 2013, the Bill was endorsed unanimously with 310 for and 0 against. This will certainly deal a big blow to Thailand’s economy and society.
According to ACT’s Vice President, Khunying Chada Wattanasiritham, the organization wants to keep international community abreast of our movement to combat corruptions and to push for measures to eradicate corruptions. According to her, by passing the amended Amnesty Bill, the Thai government is committing a breach to the 2003 United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) which came into force since 14 December 2005 and for which Thailand ratified on 1 March 2011.
Khunying Chada further added that ACT’s opposition to the promulgation of the Amnesty Bill is exclusively related to its implications on corruptions. If enforced, the Bill will have led to the perpetuation of corrupt practices and exoneration of corrupt persons rendering failure to the effort to combat corruptions in every sector in Thai society. Moreover, it shall emanate negative image of the country, erodes confidence among investors from within and outside the country.
