The province of Nan is able to cover its entire electricity demand by renewable energy in 2036 and could be Thailand's first province being 100% self-sufficient producing clean and sustainable energy. The provinces of Phuket and Rayong could cover higher shares than formerly assumed and each provide 40% of electricity demand from local renewable energy sources. The results of the study, conducted by the German Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and supported by The Joint Graduate School of Energy Environment (JGSEE), were presented by the Ministry of Energy, the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) in cooperation with the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. "The study clearly points our opportunities to design truly sustainable electricity supply scenarios in Thailand. Nan is able to cover its entire energy demand from renewables and in Phuket and Rayong significant shares of 40 percent and more could come from renewables", said Mrs.Chunsri Pongparnich, Acting Director of Policy and Strategy Co - Ordination Office of Ministry of Energy in Bangkok today. "The Ministry of Energy is encouraging provincial energy planning to tap local renewable energy resources which can significantly contribute to increase Thailand's energy security."
Renewable energy sources like i.e. solar, wind or bio energy are the only truly sustainable solution to mitigate climate change effects globally. At the same time locally sourced energy makes Thailand less dependent on energy imports and create local value. With an innovative approach, the scientist from ISE and JGSEE examined the electricity demand in the three provinces for every hour of the year to come to solid conclusions on the availability of the resource. With the data available, the Ministry of Energy in cooperation with GIZ will cooperate to come up with suggestion on a national, provincial and local level to encourage the use of more renewable energy in Thailand. The aim of this is to empower the provinces to consider renewable energy and climate change mitigation measures in their provincial planning processes.

The project "Support to the Development and Implementation of the Thai Climate Change Policy is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI), launched by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Parliament. The project supports the Thai Government in the development of an ambitious Climate Change Policy and its implementation on the national, provincial and local levels, thereby strengthening Thailand's contributions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
