Centara Hotels & Resorts recognises the importance and value, and keenly supports the Thai Finance Ministry's potential new company tax scheme to encourage the hiring of older workers. This initiative is being discussed as part of government efforts to address Thailand's imminent future as a "greying society". As of 2016, 14% of Thailand's population is aged 60 and older. The new policy measures could help the financial impact of Thailand's ageing population, and could also form a productive way to create demand for experienced, skilled workers.
Centara has already implemented a range of HR policies designed to make the most of long-term and potentially-returning employee resources, including over-50s and women returning to work after child-raising, with flexible hours, job-sharing strategies and re-deployment among the approaches being put into place.
"Employees who have been working in a similar industry or position for a long time often embody a wealth of knowledge and wisdom that can be extremely valuable," says Mr. Thirayuth Chirathivat, CEO of Centara. "I believe that our older workers represent talented resource that can't be easily replaced."
There seems to be a growing recognition globally that older employees have a lot to offer, most obviously their breadth of experience. Retaining skilled workers beyond a conventional retirement age will become an increasingly important way to keep standards high and employee rosters full.
"A diverse workforce is a better workforce because it mirrors our wide range of customers and guests, and we believe that our company will become stronger through these measures," says Mr. Chirathivat.
