Herbalife, a global nutrition company, recently held the Thailand leg of the sixth Asia Pacific Wellness Tour in Bangkok. The two-day event aimed to heighten public awareness on the importance of balanced nutrition, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle to improve overall well-being, including mental health.
The guest speaker Dr Gary Small, a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB) and also a top brain expert from the US, discussed brain health and the impact of technology on our brains. During his talk, he recommended tips to keep the brain young and expounded on Digital Dementia, a term coined to refer to the phenomenon of people feeling forgetful and distracted resulting from the overuse of digital devices.
A recent report by the Google Consumer Barometer revealed that over 50% of Thais use the Internet daily. This figure has increased by 89% since 2013. Seventy percent of Thailand's population uses smart phones, an increase of 126%, since three years ago.
"The digital age allows us to stay socially connected and access information readily, but it can also have a negative impact on mental health," he said. "Fortunately, there are simple, practical ways to enhance brain performance. Herbalife embraces a healthy, active lifestyle and firmly believes that good nutrition plays an essential role in maintaining a healthier brain," added Dr Small.
During his talk, Dr Small offered some easy tips to keep the brain young and active. He explained that physical exercise is important to keep the brain cells active, while mental and memory exercises such as crossword puzzles, Sudoku or learning a new language can help build brain muscle. Getting enough sleep, keeping stress levels low and maintaining good nutrition could lessen the chances of developing brain-related disorders.
"As a global nutrition company, Herbalife would like to help people across Thailand practice and promote good nutrition and a healthy, active lifestyle. We hope to bring positive improvements to the well-being of our people," said Mr. Suphot Rittipichaiwat, General Manager of Herbalife Thailand.
