There were many distinguished guests from Thailand and Malaysia reside in Thailand, to join the reception. Malaysia has come a long way since the independence on 31 August 1957 and the formation of the Malaysian nation that we see today on 16 September 1963. The Federation of Malaya, and later Malaysia, has been witness to many events since achieving independence from British colonial rule and becoming a sovereign state free to chart its own course in its own mould. From that date, the government and the people have strived to realise that independence. The land of Malaysia is now inhabited by more than 32 million people, with hundreds of ethnic communities, namely, Malays, Chinese, Indians, Iban, Orang Ulu, Melanau, Kadazan, Murut, Dusun, Orang Asli, Malaysians of Siamese descent, Sikhs, Eurasians and others. Certainly the tagline "Malaysia Truly Asia" clearly defines the country and its people. According to H.E. Dato' Jojie Samuel, Ambassador of Malaysia to Thailand, the commemoration of the National Day this year has been marked a special celebration for Malaysia under a new 'Pakatan Harapan' or 'Alliance of Hope'. "The government under the leadership of The Honourable Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who is currently the 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia, this historical and dramatic change in our political landscape which witnessed peaceful and smooth transition of power is a testimony of the maturity and wisdom of the Malaysian people in our democratic process and system. This has set a clear path for Malaysia to move forward towards realising our aspiration and vision of becoming a high-income and fully developed nation." 2018 also marks the 61st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Thailand, under the new government, priorities in enhancing the existing close bilateral relations and strong economic ties with Thailand will remain Malaysia's top priority. "I strongly believe that our mutual partnership in all dimensions will grow even stronger and higher over time," says the honorable ambassador. Being Malaysia's 5th largest trading partner globally and 2nd largest within ASEAN, total bilateral trade in 2017 recorded an 8.27% growth to USD 22.10 billion as compared to the previous year.
