Mr Vincent Cheng, Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, met Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra today during his first visit to Thailand since becoming Chairman in May this year.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Mr Cheng expressed his confidence in the Thai economy and HSBC’s continuing commitment to this market.
Mr Cheng said, at the start of his 4-day trip in Thailand: “Thailand is an important country for HSBC. We are keen to develop our business in Thailand to meet new opportunities as they arise. We are focusing on expanding our retail banking, commercial banking and foreign exchange and treasury services. To build on our international reputation, we also want to strengthen our brand in the local market. Through outstanding services, product innovation and involvement in community projects, we hope customers will come to recognise HSBC’s commitment to developing our presence in Thailand.”
The HSBC Group is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. The Group’s international network comprises over 9,700 offices in 77 countries and territories. Since its establishment as the first commercial bank in Thailand in 1888, HSBC has deployed its global expertise and local knowledge to serve local residents, Thai businesses and the local community.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Mr Cheng presented eight vehicles to the Prime Minister Office’s Disaster Relief Fund. The vehicles will be given to public hospitals in the southern provinces of Phuket, Krabi and Phang-nga and will be used for continuing tsunami relief and public health work. The vehicles were purchased through a THB4 million donation from HSBC, which raised the funds with the help of HSBC’s credit cardholders in Thailand. HSBC launched a campaign in January to donate THB1 for every THB300 spent by customers using HSBC credit cards. The programme was successful in raising THB4 million in total, all of which was used to purchase the eight vehicles for the Disaster Relief Fund.
