NEW DELHI, India (eTurboNews) - Singapore's newly-merged budget carriers Jetstar Asia and Valuair Ltd. announced new routes to Bangalore and resort island of Bali. The development follows expansion of Singapore's air rights pacts with both India and Indonesia in recent months.
Following the merger, the two airlines will eventually operate under a combined entity called Orange Star but it is not immediately clear when the airlines will change names.
Among other developments, Jetstar Asia has opened ticket sales for a four-times weekly service to Phuket that will commence on October 25. "Phuket is one of the great tourist destinations. With rebuilding almost complete, we are confident that demand will grow, occupancy rates of hotels will continue to increase, and our new service will make commercial sense," said Ken Ryan, chief executive officer, Jetstar Asia.
Jetstar Asia has also started inaugural flight to Calcutta, marking a new chapter in Indian aviation as Singapore's first value-for-money airline to establish links with India. Jetstar Asia flies between Singapore and Calcutta three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
Jetstar said it would fly five times weekly to Bangalore, and add another flight to Calcutta, bringing its weekly total to four. Starting end-October, Valuair will fly four times a week to Denpasar in Bali.
Meanwhile, another Singapore-based low-cost airline Tiger Airways recenlty indicated that it expected passenger numbers to hit three million next year as it takes delivery of new aircraft and launches new routes. The carried just over 500,000 passengers in its first year of operations. Tiger Airways flies from Singapore to Macau, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, competing with Malaysia's AirAsia and a partnership of Valueair and Qantas Airways' associate Jetstar Asia.
