Bangkok--Dec 2--Siemens
Siemens Ltd. announced its business results for the fiscal year 2004/2005 which ended on 30 September 2005. Sales reached 14 billion baht. New orders surged from 13.1 billion baht in the previous year to 31.7 billion baht, due to major projects awarded in telecom, power and transportation sectors.
“We had a very dynamic year in 2004/2005,” said Mr. Lothar Herrmann, the newly appointed President and CEO of Siemens Ltd. “Our business volume grew substantially to 31.7 billion baht, largely because of major infrastructure projects which are the airport rail link project, the BTS maintenance extension contract, a power plant in Songkhla as well as the TOT’s 565K project and several smaller contracts in the industry sectors.”
In the Information and Communications segment, Communications posted new orders of 10 billion baht. The orders came mainly from three major projects e.g. from Advanced Info Service Plc., Advance Datanetwork Communications Co., Ltd. and TOT Corporation Plc. for the GSM network expansion, the home entertainment (Buddy Broadband) solution and the 565,000 IP-based fixed lines project respectively. Siemens Business Services, an IT group specializing in SAP and e-business solutions, recorded new orders of 495.5 million Baht.
In the transportation segment, new orders in Transportation Systems (TS) surged to 12.2 billion baht due to two key contracts. In January 2005, TS together with its international consortium partners won the Airport Rail Link and City Air Terminal project of the State Railway of Thailand. This new 28 km-long 160 kph-speed rail line will connect the Bangkok city center with the New Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. Siemens is responsible for rolling stock, trackwork, power supply, signaling and telecommunication systems as well as other electrical and mechanical systems. In addition, TS was also awarded an extension of the BTS Skytrain maintenance contract for another 10 years by the BTS operator, Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc.
In the Industry segment, most of the groups significantly improved their broad-base businesses, both in sales and new orders. Big orders came from manufacturing and process industries such as oil & gas, cement, chemical & petrochemical, paper, food and beverage as well as automotive and pharmaceutical. Automation and Drives enjoyed a new high of over 1 billion baht in new orders. Industrial Solutions and Services increased its new orders to 797 million baht. Siemens Building Technologies, which offers fire safety and security products and systems, booked new orders of 84.5 million baht respectively.
In the Power segment, Power Transmission and Distribution’s new orders were slightly down to 1.38 billion baht while Power Generation secured a major order from EGAT Plc. for the Songkhla combined-cycle power plant, resulting in a surge in new orders to 4.8 billion baht.
Medical Solutions posted remarkable increase in new orders of 658.5 million baht due to supply of highly advanced imaging systems for diagnosis such as 64-slice CT scanners and high-end MRIs to leading university and private hospitals. In addition, the first PET/CT scanner in Thailand for early cancer detection and diagnosis was recently ordered by the prestigious Chulabhorn Cancer Center.
Mr. Herrmann stated, “Our performance in 2005 proved that we are on track to strengthen our position in all business areas for a long-term success.” And then continued, “In 2006, we will strive to expand our businesses in all areas more rigorously, particularly in the broadly-based industry sectors where we have growth potential, such as in water, wastewater treatment, food & beverage, chemical & petrochemical, automobile as well as oil & gas. We have recently opened a new branch office in Map Taphut, Rayong, to serve our customers in the eastern seaboard area more efficiently.”
“With the strengths of our broad business portfolio and given the planned and continued investments in large infrastructure projects, we are well prepared to further contribute to the economic development of Thailand,” concluded Mr. Herrmann.
