CAST & CREW
STEPHEN CHOW
Director, Producer, Writer, Actor and Star of Kung Fu Hustle
Stephen Chow is Asia’s top comedy star and was declared by TIME magazine to be Asia’s most beloved entertainer. Having starred in more than 50 films, it was the success of 2001’s Shaolin Soccer that lifted him to international stardom.
Over the years, Chow has firmly established himself as Hong Kong’s undisputed king of comedy, with award-winning roles in hits such as Final Justice, All For The Winner, Justice My Foot, Saint of
Gamblers, and A Chinese Odyssey. Among Chow’s many regional accolades include the prestigious Taipei Golden Horse Award, an Asia Pacific Film Award and a Hong Kong Critics Society Award. He has also been lavishly praised by Hollywood bigwig writer-director-actor Quentin Tarantino, who describes Chow as Hong Kong’s best actor.
Kung Fu Hustle marks the realization of Stephen Chow’s dream to make a film that celebrates the many forms of martial arts. It was lovingly crafted as a homage to his idol, Bruce Lee, while still keeping his trademark brand of wry humour.
YUEN WO PING
Action Choreographer
Yuen Wo Ping is arguably the most famous movie action choreographer ever, with work on films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Matrix, Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Kill Bill 2: Volume 2. Working as Bruce Lee’s stuntman before he became an action choreographer and director himself, Yuen is now one of the world’s most influential filmmakers and has redefined Hong Kong film action with increasingly imaginative choreography. He has worked on more than 50 films, many of which are regarded as classic Hong Kong martial arts movies, such as Drunken Master, Once Upon a Time in China II and Iron Monkey.
YUEN WAH
Supporting Actor
Though he plays one of the good guys in Kung Fu Hustle, Yuen Wah is known to Hong Kong film fans as “the Magnificent Villain,” a title he earned playing evildoers as a fixture in Hong Kong cinema. One of the original “Seven Little Fortunes” — the famous Peking Opera school performing group which also included Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung — Yuen Wah began 10 years of martial arts training at six, and in the early 1970s, became Bruce Lee’s stunt double.
Yuen Wah gained notoriety playing a villain in the 1987 film ‘Eastern Condors’, and has appeared in more than 100 movies, working with top Hong Kong directors John Woo, Tsui Hark, Sammo Hung and Jeff Lau.
YUEN QIU
Supporting Actress
In Kung Fu Hustle, Yuen Qiu made a remarkable return to the screen after 28 years of retirement, at the specific request of Stephen Chow. Also one of the famous “Seven Little Fortunes”, Yuen Qui began her movie career as a stunt person and soon became one of the few well-known stuntwomen in the Hong Kong movie industry. In 1975, Yuen Qiu married and retired from the film business. Kung Fu Hustle is the first film she has made since then.
