Bangkok--Jan 19--Phenomena’s
Committed to develop quality personnel to support domestic and overseas productions
Projecting 20% growth in 2006
Sathit Kalawantavanich, President and Film Director of Phenomena Company Limited, the leading production house in Thailand, said regarding the outlook of production house industry in 2006 that if the economic situation slowed down, it might priory affect the TV commercial production budget leading to the stronger competition due to over 50 existing production houses in the country. However, Sathit believes that the production houses committed to high quality production will still be in demand especially the productions that the consumers can recall. Such productions would rely on the directors with high creativity and supporting teams which can add production value to the production within the specified timeline and budget.
Sathit said that the current production standard in Thailand begins to gain international recognition which can be seen from many Thai TV commercials being awarded international accolade. At the same time, many overseas firms start to hire Thai production houses. It’s a good opportunity to develop Thailand as the regional production hub due to the lower production costs. However, Thai government should render its support in term of personnel development and the rules and regulations that promote the domestic businesses.
The company has taken about 15-20% overseas production job each year. Most recently, Phenomena was named the most awarded production house in the world in 2005 by the Gunn Report, which is the world’s leading independent research firm, whereas yet again, the company’s film director, Thanonchai Sornsriwichai was also named the most awarded director in the world for the second time. Such success was derived from the company’s commitment to the creativity and quality teamwork. At present, the company has 11 directors, 10 producers and about 150 people in the supporting team.
“We think that we have the high chance of becoming number one in Asia because our strength lies toward our strong and competent team which processes high flexibility to eradicate all limitations and barriers. Anyhow, in order to be at the forefront in the international level, in my opinion, Thailand still need to further enhance its personnel development in term of creativity and technology utilization to add more details to the productions to make them more interesting. As for Phenomena, we continuously emphasize on our human resources by providing the employees with training and opportunity to produce creative works so as to develop new film directors”, said Sathit.
Yodphet Sudsawad, Phenomena’s Managing Director said that the company produced about 11 TV commercials per month last year with its billing totaled 250 million baht. When combined the performance with its affiliated production houses, Promophobia and Tongta Film, the group billing amounted to about 400 million baht last year. It ranked number 2 in the industry in term of market shares in 2004.
“The company has never projected its annual growth rate as we believe that commitment to quality work is a more sustainable factor in competitive enhancement. Our performance during the past 12 years has been a proof to our quality and the quantity of work gained from fame and recognition. Being named the most awarded production house did not mean that we have reached the point where we can stop. We will continue to develop our team especially in term of post production. We need to keep our team updated on the technology aspect to be able to support our clients’ productions. Therefore, making new experiments will be the major direction that would lead to the next level of new knowledge base and stand for the Thai production house industry”, said Yodphet.
As for this year business plan, the company will continue to engage in both domestic and overseas production in line with the number of directors and team which is estimated at about 10 TV commercials per month. In addition, Phenomena Motion Pictures Company Limited, one of its affiliated companies, will premiere “Dek Hor”, its latest motion picture during the end of February this year after its overwhelming success from “Shutter” in 2004. At the same time, the company has recently diversified into the new business that complimented its existing business by incorporating Pseudo Effect Company Limited to involve in computer graphic, motion graphic, visual effect and animation. The new company will also provide its service to other production houses. Phenomena forecasted the same growth rate as other years at the average of 20%
