Big C reports that net earnings for Q1/06 grew by 24.7% despite the economic slowdown, reinforcing the company’s leadership in pricing and customer satisfaction. Big expects earnings to continue to increase during Q2 because of increased tourism and shopping.
Mr. Yves Bernard Braibant, Chief Executive Officer & President, Big C Supercenter PLC, disclosed that the political situation and increasing cost of fuel at the beginning of the year negatively affected consumer confidence, but did not affect Big C’s performance, as evident by the company meeting its targets.
The operating results of the company and its subsidiaries for the first quarter of 2006 show net earnings grew to 659 million baht, representing a 24.7% increase over the 528 million baht earned in Q1 2005.
In Q1 2006, Big C and its subsidiaries recorded sales of 13.519 billion baht, representing an increase of 11.2% from the 12.157 billion baht in Q1 2005 sales. Rental and service income from tenants was 576 million baht, representing an increase of 19% from the 484 million baht in Q1 2005 rental and service income. Other income totaled 1.344 billion baht, a 19.5% increase from Q1 2005’s 1.125 billion baht.
“Big C expects continued strong sales next quarter. The second quarter is traditionally the season of tourism and school summer vacations. In addition, customers take their kids to shop at Big C for the Back-to-School period,” said Braibant. “Consumers are satisfied with the service Big offers them and welcome our leadership in terms of pricing and product range. Big C’s strict standards that ensure the continued leadership are key factors that keep our customers satisfied.”
