Thai Elephant polo event raises US$200,000, heightens awareness of the endangered species
DHL Global Mail took part in this year’s “King’s Cup” Elephant Polo Tournament in Thailand with a team of its own and, at the same time, acted as one of the main sponsors. By participating in this event, the international mail specialists of Deutsche Post World Net supported the efforts to protect the endangered elephant population of Thailand.
The “King’s Cup” took place from 4th to 10th September in the Golden Triangle, located 60 kilometres from the city of Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand, and raised close to US$200,000 for the conservation and welfare of Thailand’s elephants, the so called ‘Kings of the Jungle’.
“Supporting the Elephant Polo tournament — a not so common sport - demonstrates that DHL Global Mail is willing to go to unusual ways for the greater benefit of both the community and, of course, for our customers. I am very happy that we could unite behind a common cause together with our invited partners,” said Michael Culme-Seymour, CEO Asia Pacific & Emerging Markets, DHL Global Mail.
Through the National Elephant Institute’s Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, the donations gathered during the event will be used exclusively for the protection of the Thai elephant, which is held in high regard among the public because of its role as a heraldic animal of the Royal Family and as the traditional beast of burden. The existence of the Thai elephant is seriously endangered as the population has decreased from 100,000 in former times to 2,500 animals today.
“As a responsible corporate citizen, DHL Global Mail is proud that we supported the ‘King’s Cup’ for the second year as it showcases our commitment for the protection of our environment,” added Jan-Willem Adrian, Commercial Director Asia Pacific, DHL Global Mail.
DHL is not only committed to building on its market-leading position in the region but also runs Corporate Sustainability initiatives towards providing substantial support to its staff, customers and the community where DHL operates
Besides the collection of donations, one of the event’s objectives was to raise awareness about the Thai elephant’s situation not only in Thailand, where the “King’s Cup” enjoys strong popularity as the tournament is held under royal patronage and meets with much public enthusiasm, but also across the region and beyond.
A total of twelve teams participated, with the “This is the Life.com” squad winning the cup. The DHL Global Mail team finished in sixth position.
