Bangkok--26 Oct--Standard & Poor's
Distress in the U.S. speculative-grade bond market inched down to 2.6% in October 2006 from 3.0% in September (per the conventional definition) according to Standard & Poor's Ratings Services latest "U.S. Distressed Debt Monitor" report.
"The distress ratio is at its lowest level since April 1998, and has been falling since its most recent 5.7% high in February," noted Diane Vazza, head of Standard & Poor's Global Fixed Income Research Group. "At 2.6%, the distress ratio is noticeably lower than the 6.1% average recorded in full-year 2005 and 7.4% in 2004."
Low distress levels are also mirrored in the U.S. leveraged loan market, where the percentage of performing loans trading at prices less than 80 cents on the dollar has remained at or near zero since April. In the U.S., automotive and telecommunications—sectors that have consistently been at the top of this list in recent months—showed the highest propensity for distress as a share of total speculative-grade rated issues. Following behind telecommunications, was the health care sector (notably in the corporate health care segment).
A total of 109 rated companies had issues trading at distressed levels at the various thresholds.
