Bangkok--24 Nov--CDSC
The Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiangmai University, in cooperation with the strategic clusters of the 8 upper Northern provinces and the 5 private clusters, promotes the “Lanna Style” craft fashion--hoping to increase the potentials to compete in the global market arena by the year 2009. The project is to be carried out by establishing The Craft Design Service Center (CDSC) with the hope to increase value 35% more of the total OTOP distribution that participated the project. It will also produce the “Lanna Style Book” for entrepreneurs, craft manufacturers, and designers to be used as a guide in designing their products.
Mr. Napong Sagnuannapaporn, The CDSC project manager, reveals the source of The Craft Design Service Center Project indicating that the center was established in order to help increase the potential to compete and to add value to the craft products within the 8 upper Northern provinces. This is due to the constantly rising competitive environment in the world market both in prices and in production costs resulted from market expansion of the new manufacturing countries. At the same time, the Lanna craft products are also facing the problem of product duplication. Craft designers in the 8 upper Northern provinces also lack awareness and creativity to use the Lanna’s distinctive self-portrayal and apply it in designing their craft products.
The Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiangmai University (which is well equipped with experts both in Lanna studies and in craft product design), hence brings together the strategic clusters of the 8 upper northern provinces and the 5 private clusters-- including the Chiangmai and Northern Chamber of Commerce, The Chiangmai and Northern Council of Industry, The Chiangmai Banking Club, The Association for Promoting Thailand’s Small and Medium Enterprises, The Northern Handicrafts Manufacturers and Exporters Association (NOHMEX), and The Network of Northern OTOP Manufacturers-- to found The Craft Design Service Center or CDSC.
The main task of the CDSC project is to conduct research, collect design information, develop craft products, and propagate as well as communicate awareness of craft design using the uniqueness of Lanna culture. The project also sets out to create the capability to compete at the international level by the year 2009 and to provide cooperative services for the 8 upper Northern provinces. This includes promoting the image of Thai craft products along with setting the trend of the “Lanna Style” craft fashion in order to create self-portrayal for the Lanna craft products in the future. This development is fundamentally built upon the cultural cost (or capital) of Lanna in order to design such craft products that will be highly acceptable both domestically and internationally. The project aims at increasing the distribution value to 35%, encouraging more export-minded craft manufacturers, and enlarging the quantity of standardized community products.
The operation of the CDSC project focuses on studying the Lanna wisdom in the works of art and craft, the culture, and the environment. It concentrates on promoting the Lanna spirit and perpetuating the Lanna wisdom of the 8 upper Northern provinces. The project operation also involves finding the ways to develop the product prototype according to the Lanna Style, taking the trips to overseas to learn about design service for the application and the improvement of the products in various projects. These projects are The Pilot Project for Developing the Prototype Craft Products, The Pilot Project for Developing the Prototype Product Packaging, The Project for Developing the Entrepreneurs and the Furniture Industry Designers from Lanna provinces, The Project for Furniture Products Contest, The Project for Computer Graphic Training, and The Project for Training the Development of Electronic Commerce.
Mr. Napong Sagnuannapaporn, The CDSC project Manager, reveals further that “The CDSC is now producing a book and a CD Rom entitled ‘Lanna Style Book’ to be used by the entrepreneurs and the product manufacturers as a guide in designing and developing their craft products according to The ‘Lanna Style’. This is intended to increase the potentials to compete and to add value to the craft products within the 8 upper Northern provinces. The content of the book is a compilation and a reflection of the physical features of the Lanna geography and topography. Moreover, the book contains the works of art and craft which are in fact the cultural heritage of Lanna and the architectural and cultural projects as well as the lifestyle of the Lanna people”.
Those who are interested in the book and CD Rom entitled “Lanna Style Book” may contact The Craft Design Service Center Project (CDSC) located at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiangmai University, 239 Huaykeaw Rd., Tumbon Sutep, Ampher Muang, Chiangmai province 50200.
