Off on another adventure, the seven remaining Teams continued the Race in New Zealand, traveling from Auckland to Queenstown, a popular destination for adventure travelers and lovers of extreme sports. With such a destination, the Teams were faced with an adrenalin-filled, thrilling leg with non-stop action, including challenges that were definitely not for the faint-hearted
New Beginning
The Teams left in the order that they arrived at the Pitstop of the last leg at the Auckland Museum, after a mandatory rest period. As first-place team in the previous leg, Andy & Laura left first at 4.30am, with Andrew & Syeon leaving about twenty minutes later, and Joe Jer & Zabrina leaving ten minutes after them. Howard & Sahran were the next team to leave at 5.13am, and arrived at the airport just in time to book their flights with the others. Sandy & Francesca were the next team to leave at 6.22am, followed by Mardy & Marsio and finally, Sharon & Melody.
The Teams had to make their way to Dunedin, located on the South Island of New Zealand, locate the flagged four-wheel drives at the airport, and drive themselves to Queenstown.
Caught in the Act!
It wasn’t long before all the Teams were on the road, turning this into a road race. Teams took various means to get ahead, including speeding. The competitive pair, Andy & Laura, again tried to get an advantage over the rest by speeding and overtaking others.
As Andy put it, “Unlucky, that’s our middle name” - a police car pulled Andy & Laura’s vehicle over, catching them driving at 146km/h! It was an offence that would normally constitute an immediate loss of license. The other teams took the opportunity to get ahead of them while being mindful of the speed limit. As Andy tried to remind Laura about keeping to the speed limit, an irate Laura who now had to take over the wheels, screamed, “Don’t tell me how to f***ing drive after you’ve just lost your license!”
Will this couple be able to withstand the many setbacks that had hit them time and again (with Laura injuring her leg, and now Andy losing his license), to keep themselves in the Race? Besides, a time penalty will be slapped on them for breaking the law — would that also cost Andy and Laura their place in the Race?
High Anxiety part 1
Detour - The Teams had a choice between two outdoor adventures. One option was to take turns performing the ledge swing, which hurls the team members 400m above Queenstown, and the other was to participate in a tag team relay, going four laps around the luge circuit.
Howard tried to talk Sahran into trying the ledge swing, but Sahran was adamantly against it. Another team facing a disagreement tension was certainly setting in as all the teams tried to keep themselves in the Race
High Anxiety part 2
The next challenge was at Offroad Adventures where Teams had to complete a quadbike course. Everyone had to complete the challenge in the order that they had arrived there, but there was some doubt as to whether all the teams would honor that agreement and many were doubtful of one particular team
High Anxiety part 3
Oops too tight!
Mardy & Marsio reached the Offroad Adventures destination first but had to wait for extra-large riding suits! Will this cost them their lead?
And too muddy!
The muddy track proved too much for some teams, as their bikes got bogged down in the mud!
Would there be any drastic change of positions again?
High Anxiety part 4
Roadblock - Only one team member can perform this task: to bungee jump from 134m over Nevis Valley, reputedly the world’s wildest bungee jump! They were only allowed a maximum of 2 minutes to make the jump, otherwise their turn would be forfeited which might then result in a penalty for non-completion of the Roadblock.
This challenge was certainly not for the faint-hearted, and Sahran was definitely not the only one shivering in fear this time Who jumped? Who backed out?
