THE AMAZING RACE ASIA
EPISODE 8
On Thursday, 28 December 2006 at 9.00pm
Not Bye Bye to Amazing Thailand Yet
After a mandatory rest period, the teams leave Bangkok to another part of Thailand and get a taste the beach life…but it’s not all sand and surf! Flagged longtail boats at the destination hold the next clue, and the teams are to make their way there by bus, but first they need to figure out how to get to the bus terminal!
As winners of the last leg, Andy & Laura have the privilege of being the first team to depart at 1am, followed by Andrew & Syeon five minutes later. In third spot, Howard & Sahran set off five minutes later, but stop at a local shop to ask for directions.
Two girls with no cash
Joe Jer & Zabrina are not only the last team to depart from Bangkok, they also have the unfortunate penalty of not having any money to start this leg of the race. They need cash to get them to the bus terminal and buy bus tickets. Will any of the teams be kind and help them out knowing that a possible elimination looms ahead?
A quick fix too soon…
Learning that the earliest bus only leaves the terminal between 5 — 6am, Sandy and Francesca return to the hotel for some rest. Andy and Laura decide to do the same. Is this their wisest decision so far?
Mardy & Marsio, Andrew & Syeon and Howard & Sahran find an earlier bus that will take them halfway to their destination but they would have to find a connecting bus once they get to the halfway mark. But while on road, they become uncertain of their decision as local folks tell them that there might not be a connecting bus to their destination.
Once the three teams get to the halfway point, they unhappily discover that the next bus would take an extra 10 hours to get them the destination, putting them four hours behind the other teams! This situation has the teams frustrated and one very unhappy camper even blurts out, “We’ve taken how many buses?”
What were they thinking?
At their destination, Mardy & Marsio run out of cash and have to beg everyone… A disaster of their own making as they had decided earlier to swap their large backpacks for smaller ones (weight was becoming a heavy issue), leaving them with only a small sum of cash to complete this leg of the race.
Beware…Fast Forward ahead!
Arriving at the clue box, the teams find not only a Detour, but also a Fast Forward! The first team that arrives at Pranang Bay and successfully completes the Fast Forward task will zoom straight to the Pitstop.
Down to crunch time, one team decides to do the Fast Forward. The harsh task is for both team members to kayak along the cliff face until they find their next clue which is hidden among the many caves in the area. It is a nightmare for the team who has absolutely no kayaking experience and has trouble balancing the kayak, even flipping several times! Will they succeed in completing the Fast Forward or will they have to start from scratch and do the Detour?
It’s a smashing Detour!
The Detour offers the teams a choice of two tasks — smashing through a pile of 75 coconuts, using only a hammer, until they find a coconut filled with red ink, or else snorkeling amongst 100 buoys to find the correct clue (only 10 of the buoys contain the correct clue).
Only one team is game for snorkeling whilst Howard & Sahran, Sandy & Francesca and Joe Jer & Zabrina start smashing coconuts vigorously, earning them all numerous blisters.
Frustrated as minutes tick by and the clue has yet to be found, two teams head out to the water to take on the snorkeling task. The change of tasks will cost them time and might set them back to the bottom of the pack. How will they catch up?
The Roadblock hurts
This Roadblock, which only one team member can do, involves climbing the towering face of Railey East 123 Wall, to retrieve their next clue… but it will be a painful task for those who have blisters from the coconut Detour!
Will Sahran save his team by performing the Roadblock despite his major fear of heights, now that Howard is a down soldier with blistered hands?
It’s elimination. Who will go?
Heading for the Pit Stop, the team who got the clue first, wastes good time as their boatman takes them to the wrong island! The competition gets rough as two other teams go head to head as they rush for the clue box at the same time…
