From dramatic couture cuts to vibrant bright colours, the Spring Summer ’07 collection from Karen Millen signals a new confidence. There’s an emphasis on strong silhouettes from clean Sixties-inspired shapes to ornate but elegant dresses. Metallics add glamour while sporty, youthful styling brings a fresh vigour to daywear. Available now at Central Chidlom and Siam Discovery.
Bold colour dominates the spring/summer collection. Ultra-feminine dresses come in bright georgettes with pretty details; a lime green strapless dress is decorated with neat little bows while a sunshine yellow prom-dress has a ruched bodice and delicate spaghetti straps. Others have more sculptural decoration, such as the precise asymmetric folds on party dresses in shimmering orange taffeta or emerald satin or the pleated scoop-neck on a deep pink satin Fifties-inspired gown. Pretty colour is also used in splashy florals and rich, dense embroideries.
From neat shifts to sharp coats, silhouettes have a distinctly Sixties edge. A fitted scoop neck mini-dress in white, black or yellow and a belted dogtooth check mini-trench both have a sexy Mod feel. The decade’s clean lines are echoed in cropped cotton jackets and a beautiful stone suede duster coat with patch pockets. Chic cocktail dresses in plush ottomans come with matching cropped jackets while the occasion coat also makes a return. Jewellery reflects the futuristic face of the Sixties with crystal dome cocktail rings, sleek silver cuffs and chunky resin bangles in metallics or monochrome while shiny silver peep-toe platforms or wedge sandals add a sleek finish.
Athletic styling and details make a return, albeit with a glamorous spin. A zip-front white dress in parachute silk channels Eighties sportswear with a draw-string waist, roomy pockets and tab fastenings while a neat fitted parka in a gorgeous dove grey reflects a sleeker, early Nineties look. Other pieces have more subtle sporty touches such as the zip details on a vintage blue denim dress or the preppy cut on cropped straight-leg trousers or full drill cotton skirts. Neat tote bags in washed leather and strappy sandals in matt leathers complete the look.
High-shine fabrics and details add glamour to pared-down daywear and sophisticated eveningwear. A cropped-sleeve jacket in elegant oyster ottoman has a dramatic origami-pleated collar and a matching pencil skirt. Other simple shapes such as clean shifts or empire-line dresses are given a modern twist with subtle shimmering materials. For evening, a silver sequin mini-dress features a daringly draped plunge back and a fine overlay of black organza. From sleek and sporty to ultra-sophisticated Karen Millen has put a fresh but wearable spin on the season's key trends.
