Bangkok--17 May--Ken Scott
Bangkok-based Global Investments International is offering a Land Rover Freelander for any golfer who makes a hole-in-one on the 6th hole in the Cyder Cup pro-am tournament at Subhapruek Golf Club on Saturday.
Global and Zurich International have made insurance preparations in case there is a hole-in-one. The vehicle, worth 2.49 million baht, is unprecedented for such a modest gathering of expatriate businessmen who only pursue golf as a hobby.
“The point we want to make,” said Global’s chief executive Mr Neil Robbirt, “is that golf and financial investment are the same — both require expertise and strategy. If you get it exactly right the rewards can greatly exceed expectations.”
While Global has been managing the finances of hundreds of expatriates in Thailand and the region since 1994, Mr Robbirt says there is an emerging market to deliver financial advice to the increasing number of expatriates retiring to Thailand.
“Many of them sell their properties in UK and Europe for more than GBP300,000, with many also drawing a pension. When you have a long retirement ahead of you it is imperative that you manage such savings and income properly. Leaving it in the high street bank for 5% a year is not necessarily the best way to do it,” he said.
Thailand’s property sector is also taking notice. “Early retirement, particularly from UK and Japan, is a trend we’re noticing” said Bangkok-based Robert Collins, managing director of Savills Thailand representative office.. “Some developers are now creating the physical environment in Thailand to attract foreign retirees.” Savills is the largest real estate agency in UK.
Mr Robbirt said financial advisors that provide secure long-term solutions that meet clients’ financial, property and medical care needs will be the ones that succeed in servicing the retiree sector. “There are safe solutions that provide secure returns with a 3rd party bank guarantee,” he said.
If none of the 32 players competing on Saturday make a hole in one on the 6th, the closest to the hole will win the use of a Land Rover Discovery for a long weekend.
