Banpu-Mahidol Launches “2nd Power Green Camp” Fun Science Learning Promoted to Commemmorate HM’s 80th Anniversary
Banpu Public Company Limited and the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University call for young science enthusiasts to participate in “The Power Green Camp 2”, scheduled for October 2007 at the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, Salaya Campus. Application must be submitted by July 20.
To commemorate HM’s 80th anniversary and his talents and remarkable contribution to the environment, “The Power Green Camp” this year will focus on environmental science workshop. This year, 70 Mattayom 5 students with strong interest in science and environment will be recruited to participate in the camp where they will enjoy theoretical learning and science activities arranged and guided by experienced scientists and academics. They will also win a chance to have a real-life experience in Mahidol University’s advanced environmental science lab.
Dr. Anuchat Poungsomlee, Dean, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, said, “To join the entire nation in celebrating HM’s 80th anniversary, “The Power Green Camp” activities aim to encourage young participants to learn and apply science in environment conservation, following HM’s initiatives in environment conservation and self-sufficient living. The sufficiency economy principle will be included in all activities to have it ingrained in the next generation. We want young people to be aware and understand the country’s environment issues. We want them to apply HM’s philosophy into their daily life and stand out from the crowd to help the nation solve environmental problems in sustainable way.”
He added that “The Power Green Camp” is organized around the three pillars — educational integration, learning from experience and empowering life and imagination. With the three pillars combined with new information, knowledge and activities tailored for this camp, the participants will become knowledgeable and capable of applying their learning to their real life. They will be able to contribute to the better and sustainable environment development as well as to further transfer their knowledge to others.
Mrs. Udomlak Olarn, Corporate Communications Director, Banpu Public Company Limited, the major sponsor of “The Power Green Camp” project, said that environmental problem became a global issue. Global warming, water, air and noise pollutions have become worse and widespread. Providing knowledge and education on environmental science and encouraging young generation to embrace environment and natural resource conservation practice into their daily life would be a critical solution to this problem. Young people who have strong ability to systematically analyze and solve problems will become valuable human resources in the future.
“Young students participating in “The Power Green Camp 2” program will also have the opportunity to learn about His Majesty’s initiative and philosophy on sufficiency economy,” said Mrs. Olarn. “We believe the activities related to sufficiency economy philosophy will make the camp more interesting and valuable. The participants will be committed to contributing to the sustainable environmental conservation.”
Students eligible to participate in “The Power Green Camp 2” must be Mattayom 5 students, majoring in science, with minimum accumulated GPAX of 2.75. Interested persons must submit a certification letter from their own schools and a one-A4-page essay on “Applying Science for Sustainable Environment”. The essay must be original and has never been submitted to or won any other awards. Applicants who have earlier participated in any environmental or science project competition must also submit a copy of their works.
