Officials from ASEAN stock exchanges are in Singapore to present information to institutional investors including the region’s development of governance during the past decade after the region’s economic crisis, good economic fundamentals, capital market development as well as collective marketing effort.
Top executives from the Jakarta, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Hanoi, and Thai exchanges will join an ASEAN and Vietnam exchange panel on May 23, 2007. The session is part of CLSA Corporate Access Forum hosted by CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets during May 21 — 25, 2007, at The Oriental Singapore. About 500 participants representing 150 organizations and leading companies in Asia are expected to attend the presentation sessions/panels.
“Each individual exchange in ASEAN may not be large in terms of market capitalization, but as a group, it becomes an interesting market group with total market cap. of USD 1.17 trillion (approx. THB 41.12 trillion).
“Presenting information as a group should enhance the attractiveness of the markets in this region. Moreover, gaining information from top executives should enhance confidence and potentials of the markets as well. Participation of Thai exchange will increase its exposure among international investors. Concerning collaboration among exchanges, all ASEAN exchanges have joined in developing the FTST/ASEAN Index to raise profile of ASEAN as a brand,” The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) President Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai said.
Points that SET will present to the panel include product development in the area of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), options, and bonds; corporate governance, industries in which Thailand has a competitive advantage, such as tourism, service-related industries and healthcare services. Another issue on the agenda will be about infrastructure development to facilitate investment in the Thai market, e.g., DMA (direct market access) and SBL (securities borrowing and lending) facilities. Also, SET will assure investors of Thai economic and political conditions, as well as governmental policies.
“In addition to the panel session, SET executives will have one-on-one meetings with foreign fund managers, thus allowing them the opportunity to acquire information about the Thai market and for us to present other relevant information, assuring them of the infrastructure of the Thai market and investment opportunities in new products, e.g., ETFs and SET50 Index Options,” Ms. Patareeya said.
Besides fundamental facts, the management of ASEAN exchanges will keep institutional investors updated on improvement of governance during the past decade after the region’s economic crisis along with their collaboration to develop regional capital market to attain sustainable growth and making the region an attractive investment destination. Apart from SET, five Thai listed companies have also been invited to join CLSA Corporate Access Forum. They are: Central Pattana PCL, BEC World PCL, Kiatnakin Bank PCL, Major Cineplex Group PCL, and Bumrungrad Hospital PCL.
