Bangkok--28 Jun--PC & Associates Consulting Cisco today showcased the benefits of outdoor wireless solutions in a half-day conference for end-users and partners in Bangkok. Cisco’s outdoor wireless solutions have been deployed in numerous cities around the world for applications from as simple as providing public wireless Internet access to sophisticated ones such as public safety, improving government services and raising organisational efficiency. These deployments are indicative of the fast-growing market for outdoor wireless services and support Infonetic’s research that estimates a five-year compound annual growth rate of 105 percent for mesh networking worldwide by 2009. “Outdoor wireless solutions are being used by city governments around the world to create digital communities that provide key public services as well as reduce the digital divide for the less privilege segments of the population. In the United States’ famous Silicon Valley for example, an open wireless network is being built that will offer universal broadband wireless Internet access to all 2.4 million Silicon Valley residents, employees and visitors spanning 40 municipalities and nearly 1,500 square miles. Many Silicon Valley residents will have the opportunity to experience the Internet at higher speeds than ever before due to the availability of the Cisco’s outdoor wireless broadband network,” said David Yuan, senior marketing manager for Cisco’s Wireless Mobility Group. Beyond providing wireless access to the general public, the Silicon Valley network will also be capable of supporting a broad range of uses by residential, small business, public sector and commercial users. For example, the wireless network can provide an alternative communications medium to first responders-fire, police and emergency medical-when traditional communications systems may not interoperate. Healthcare workers will be able to access information wherever they are, and students can more easily engage in learning beyond the classroom. Cisco outdoor wireless solutions are based on a powerful, self-organizing, self-healing, and self-configuring wireless mesh access infrastructure, in-vehicle wireless products, and Cisco Compatible Extensions-enhanced clients, that, together with a scalable, flexible back office architecture, reduce the complexities of deploying, operating, and managing citywide wireless broadband services. Once deployed, these end-to-end solutions provide the reliability, high performance, and rigorous security that cities depend on to deliver services to citizens and protect confidential and private information. “Just as wireless grew from the home to the enterprise, we now see cities adopting municipal service networks by utilizing Wi-Fi technology. As these networks are standards-based, it appeals to the largest majority of users and applications. Cisco is perhaps the only company that can provide city governments with an integrated end-to-end wireless and wired solution that is robust, highly secure and easily managed,” said Kevin Dickson, director of Product Management for Cisco’s Outdoor Wireless platforms and solutions.
