Bangkok--14 Aug--SET The Thai Library Association (TLA), under the Royal Patronage of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, today selected Prof. Khunying Manmas Chavalit, its former president, to receive the first “Prof. Khunying Manmas Chavalit” Award for library development, one of six in The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Foundation’s “Honoring Great Contributors” Program. “The award is to honor and give moral support to people who have dedicated themselves to society and to encourage others to contribute more,” said Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai, SET president and SET Foundation secretary today at the awards ceremony. For 53 years, Prof. Khunying Manmas worked to bring Thai libraries to international management and service standards and mentored new quality librarians. Currently 85, she remains active in this work. SET’s “Honoring Great Contributors” Program has six award categories: Education (the Prof. Sangvian Indaravijaya Award, with the Prof. Sangvian Indaravijaya Foundation selecting the awardee), Urban Development (the Prateep Ungsongtham Hata Award, with the winner selected by the Duang Prateep Foundation), Rural Development (the Mechai Viravaidhya Award, with the winner selected by the Population and Community Development Association of Thailand), Music Promotion (the Sugree Charoensook Award, with the winner selected by the Sugree Charoensook Foundation), Sports Promotion (the Maj.Gen.Samrerng Chaiyong Award, with the winner selected by the History of Thai Football Association), and Library Development (the Prof. Khunying Manmas Chavalit Award, with the winner selected by the Thai Library Association). The SET Foundation has selected a foundation or organization representing each field to choose an awardee. Each distinction is named after someone who played a vital role in that area. Both the honored recipient and the host organization will receive THB 1.0 million from the SET Foundation to promote and encourage continued social contribution work by organizations and people. Other awards will be announced once the selection process is finished. For the Sports Promotion award, the History of Thai Football Association invites the public to nominate someone who has contributed greatly to promote sport in Thailand.
