Bangkok--23 Aug--SET The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)’s Board of Governors today elected one of its members, Mr. Pakorn Malakul na Ayudhya, as its thirteenth Chairman. His term as chairman from August 22, 2007 to August 14, 2009. Mr. Pakorn had previously been appointed to SET’s Board as a governor by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 15, 2007. He and Mr. Wichai Poolworaluk have been appointed by the SEC to replace Mr. Vijit Supinit and Assoc. Prof. Niputh Jitprasonk, whose terms as governors ended, SET President Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai said. “The board expressed its appreciation of Mr. Vijit’s work and dedication. He provided invaluable advice and foresight during his chairmanship (August 25, 2003 — August 14, 2007). The board believes that Mr. Pakorn’s high caliber and extensive experience in the money and capital markets, and in the private and public sectors, will ensure a smooth transition and allow the Thai capital market to forge ahead with its development plans. The board also thanked Assoc. Prof. Niputh Jitprasonk for his extensive contribution,” Ms. Patareeya said. Mr. Pakorn Malakul na Ayudhya, 65, is an economics graduate from The Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. He was Secretary of the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s Committee to Establish The Stock Exchange of Thailand charged, under a World Bank recommendation, to develop the Thai capital market. At that time, he worked closely with Prof. Sidney M. Robbins, Ph.D., from Columbia University, Committee Chairman and former Finance Minister Mr. Sommai Hoontrakul and advisor Dr. Amnuay Veerawan. He has held several prominent positions in the public and private sectors, including BOT assistant governor, SEC secretary-general, Export-Import Bank of Thailand chairman, and board member of the Thai Institute of Directors Association and other financial institutions. Among his current posts are Thai Bond Market Association chairman, Government Pension Fund board expert member and Agricultural Futures Trading Commission director. Mr. Wichai Poolworaluk, 45, is an economics graduate from Thammasat University. Currently he is Thai Investors Association president, Federation of Thai Capital Market Organizations vice chairman, Woraluk Property Co., Ltd. president and Major Cineplex Groups PCL executive director. The SET Board of Governors is comprised of a maximum of eleven people, five of whom are appointed by the SEC, and five who are elected by members of the Exchange. The SET President, appointed by the board, is an ex-officio board member. Usually, the governor has a two-year term and may be re-elected or re-appointed, but not for more than two consecutive terms. The president and ex-officio governor has a four year term and may be re-appointed.
