Bangkok--19 Oct--Tadu Contemporary Art An artistic and cultural activity; “Tadu - Hoo Fang” No.1 Concert : Let’s World Your Thai By Tadu Contemporary (by Yontrakit Group) , Thai health Promotion Foundation Artists : Blue Band Jazz, Guitar Lai Thai, “Silpa Sai Thai” an orchestra of Thai musical instruments, Woodoo Band and Backpacker Percussion Showtime: 17 - 18 November 2007, 5-9 p.m. At Tadu Contemporary, Floor 7 Barcelona Motors Building, Tiemruammitr Road Thai traditional music is one of the profound roots of Thai culture with its unique sounds and melodies. However, it is often said that there are limitations for Thai music to stand up firmly among contemporary music because of its rigid conventions. Nevertheless, there are many individual bands outside the mainstream music that try to adapt, borrow, or seek inspiration from sounds and rhythm of Thai music, and create something new. “Tadu - Hoo Fang” No.1 concert : Let’s World Your Thai is thus held as a stage for these individual bands to perform their musical talents in adapting and making the traditional “Thainess” presentable amidst the contemporary society. Also, the concert serves as an alternative for audience who are interested in World music, where diversity of music gathers, each carrying its own cultural uniqueness which can always be blended to create a new harmony of music, the genuine universal language of the world. At the beginning of the concert, a jazz band will be there to create the atmosphere and “warm up” the audience for the upcoming musical confrontation between “Silpa Sai Thai”, a real Thai traditional band, and “Guitar Lai Thai”, a junior Thai guitar band, a new blood Western string instrument band with Thai accent; a battle of Thai music upon the contrast of instruments from two different spheres of the world. There are also more performances on the roof deck of percussion bands in both traditional Thai style and that of foreign exoticness. The first is ”Woodoo band”, a Thai-nationality jungle band which blends the rhythm of Southern Thai music with Djembe drum of African music and Didgeridoo of Indigenous Australian music. Then comes a percussion band “Backpacker”, with its musicians in student uniforms of Faculty of Music, Silpakorn University, who gather to create a joyful and energetic performance from musical instruments that they have especially selected for this event. Final specialty comes as an assembly of all the bands; a musical combination of Thai style music by sounds of ancient instruments from various continents, a band that creates rhythm from leftover items in the globalized age, and bands which perform Thai sounds through Western perspectives. So, this is undoubtedly a rare musical collaboration. Upon the diversity of sounds and rhythm within the diversity of culture, there is a common standpoint. This could be to “liberate the self, and let music create the world” by presenting images, talents, and cultural identity of contemporary music in our own genuine style. This project is a creation of new rhythmic and melodic possibilities for Thailand within the contemporary world where borders of culture, nationality, and language are fading. It opens up the opportunity for cultural diversity to confront, collaborate, and approve of one another, and walks Thai traditional music into a new dimension by being known in contemporary musical world. In addition, a discussion session on music “Rhythm discusses” #1 on Saturday 20 October 2007 at 1-5 p.m. on 7 flr., Barcelona Motors Building. The discussion will involve directions of the development of individual music in the society.
