These results represented increases in revenue of 26 percent over the prior year’s US$4.3 billion, unit shipment growth of 32 percent from 73.3 million to 96.5 million. On a year-over-year basis, the company expanded its share of revenue from newer markets from 29 percent to 43 percent. The company’s newer market revenue includes hard drives for notebook PCs, consumer electronics, enterprise applications and WD branded products. “We are very pleased with the performance of the WD team and the WD model in fiscal 2007,” said Ms. Margaret Koh, Director of Sales-South Asia Sales, Western Digital (S.E.Asia). “Our efficient organization has leveraged significant investments over the last five years into a strong technology portfolio and compelling products. We are well-positioned to address the diverse and growing use of hard drives in commercial and consumer markets for years to come.” Margaret also noted that the company has completed the acquisition of Komag, Inc., a leading media supplier. “WD remains confident in the strategic benefits and synergies that will accrue to WD over the long term by having an internal media operation,” she said. Furthermore, Western Digital recently reported its 2008 first quarter (ended September) result, with revenue of US$1.766 billion, comprised of US$1.726 billion of hard drive revenue and US$40 million revenue from media and substrate sales. Hard drive revenue grew by 37 percent over the prior-year comparative period on shipments of 29.4 million units, an increase of 29 percent in unit volume. In Q1, while achieving strong quarter-over-quarter growth in the high-volume desktop market, the company for the first time derived more than half its quarterly hard drive revenue from non-desktop PC applications. Fifty-three percent of hard drive revenue was from these applications, including notebook PCs, consumer electronics, enterprise applications and branded product retail sales. The company’s unit shipments for the first quarter included approximately 5.9 million 2.5-inch hard drives for mobile applications and approximately 3.7 million 3.5-inch hard drives for use in digital video recorders. Branded products accounted for 18 percent of Q1 revenue, continuing to demonstrate the value of WD’s global brand leadership “Our first quarter results reflect the WD team’s strong execution in a strong market for hard drives across all applications, regions and channels,” said Margaret. “We continue to introduce new hard drives for addressing all customer demand in consumer and commercial applications.”WD Scorpio? 320 GB WD announced it is now shipping its new WD Scorpio? 320 GB 2.5-inch SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives for notebook computers and portable storage devices. WD uses advanced head and media technology to achieve the world's highest capacity 2.5-inch, slim, 9.5mm form-factor hard drive and includes proprietary features that make the drive extraordinarily quiet while running at cool operating temperatures “The WD Scorpio 320 GB SATA hard drive is a direct result of the significant investments WD has made in proprietary head technologies. The WD Scorpio 320 GB hard drives deliver high performance with 3 Gb/s transfer rate and are destined for use in OEM notebook platforms that offer the highest storage capacities to the worldwide market, ” added Margaret.WD Goes Green Western Digital today announced its new environmentally friendly, energy-conscious GreenPower? family of WD? enterprise hard drive products. The new WD RE2 GreenPower (GP) family offers capacities of 500 gigabytes (GB), 750 GB and one terabyte (TB), and provides data-hungry organizations with a money-saving solution to combat the challenges faced in the enterprise IT sector, such as, total available drive slots, maximum capacity, and available power and budget. Fully appreciating the storage-energy dilemma, each WD RE2-GP hard drive consumes an average of 4-5 watts less than competitive hard drives, making it possible for energy-conscious enterprise customers to build servers and storage subsystems with higher capacities, consistent performance, and assured reliability, all while promoting energy conservation. By WD estimates, under typical workloads, the new WD RE2-GP drives will save more than $10 per drive per year in electricity costs. Consequently, a large data center with 10,000 drives can save $100,000 in annual energy costs. "WD's RE2-GP enterprise line of hard drives allow customers to expand their storage needs, reduce their total cost of ownership, and improve the environment all at the same time," said Margaret. "Energy efficiency is a huge concern for our customers. GreenPower drives are enabling them to meet their customer's system requirements for storage capacity, reliability, performance, and cost by integrating an enterprise-class drive that simply consumes far less power."
