Thai bourse reveals a 255% growth in mutual fund assets over five years

Bangkok--17 Dec--SET The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) declared that its promotion campaign, actively supported by capital market organizations, has lifted the overall asset size of mutual funds by 255.29% since 2003. These include retirement mutual (RMFs) and long-term equity funds (LTFs). Meanwhile, the number of unit holders has increased by 47.48%. “SET, in conjunction with other organizations such as Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Foundation for Capital Market Development Fund and Association of Investment Management Companies (AIMC) and its members, has been promoting mutual funds as an investment channel since 2003. These very successful campaigns have included Putting Your Money to Work through Mutual Funds, Let’s Activate Your LTF and Let’s Activate Your LTF- Investor Plus,” SET Executive Vice President Mr. Vichate Tantiwanich said. As of October 31, 2007, there were a total of 72 RMFs with total assets worth THB 33 billion (approx. USD 979.23 million), a 12-fold increase on 2002. As of end-June 2007, there were about 115,000 RMF accounts. LTFs were launched in 2004 with 22 funds and THB 5 billion (approx. USD 148.37 million) in assets. These grew to THB 40 billion by end-October 2007, a seven-fold increase. The number of LTF funds stood at 53. As of end-June 2007, there were about 155,000 LTF accounts. The asset value of mutual funds, including RMFs, LTFs, and other types, has risen from THB 438.34 billion in 2003 to THB 1,557.37 billion (approx. USD 46.21 billion) at present. During that period, the number of funds rose by 178.06% (from 319 to 887), and the number of unit holders grew by 47.48% (from 626,407 to 923,851), AIMC President Mr. Maris Tarab said. SET fund investment promotion continues with Tax-saving Opportunity with RMF-LTF at the Esplanade Complex, Bangkok, on Dec. 15 —16, and at the SET Building, also in Bangkok, on Dec. 22 — 23.
