Bangkok--19 Feb--Aberdeen Asset Aberdeen Asset Management Limited (Aberdeen) is please to announce that it has recently become a signatory to the United Nations Principles of Responsible Investment (UNPRI). Launched in 2006, the UNPRI is designed to encourage the investment community to put greater emphasis on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Please see the attached files for the Principles themselves as well as a list of signatories. The signatories are categorised into "asset owners", including many current and potential clients, "investment managers", including many peers and competitors, and "professional service providers". Although the UN provides the secretariat, most of the board of directors is made up of representatives of major pension funds. The Principles are voluntary and aspirational rather than prescriptive so Aberdeen's only specific requirement as a signatory is to submit an annual assessment of it's ESG work. However, Aberdeen's signing up does indicate a real commitment to incorporate analysis of these issues into it's investment work and, where necessary, strengthening it's approach to ESG analysis. The UNPRI applies across all holdings and all mandates, not just dedicated SRI mandates and portfolios. Initially Aberdeen's primary focus will be on public equities but the UNPRI does not specify any one asset class, so Aberdeen will examine it's approach to other asset classes subsequently. For further information, please log on to www.unpri.orgRobert Penaloza, CEO of Aberdeen Asset Management Co.,Ltd, comments: "We are delighted to have become a signatory to the UNPRI. This serves to reinforces Aberdeen Asset Management's commitment towards being the independent fund house of choice that seeks to actively promote a social consciousness for environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues while delivering consistently better returns to our clients."
